SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS CD
REVIEW
This band's name, SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS sounds rather Halloween-ish
and the CD cover art, a picture of a man tearing the skin off his face,
just reinforces it. However, before I turn into my 'mother' I have to
remember that when I first came across this band, it was at the end
of their set, and the crowd was all sweaty, so no one tore their face
off on stage. I guess the band just 'blew everyone's face right off'.
The CD is released by Hourzero Records out of Arizona and produced by
Bob Hoag, who seems to be the '6th man' in this five piece band, because
he is co-writer of all the songs and also performs background vocals.
The six song CD, featuring Tyson Stevens (vocals, bass), Chad Crawford
(guitar), DJ Wilson (guitar), Steve Kirby (guitar), Pouyan Afkary (keyboards),
and Peter Costa (drums), contains music that isn't scary though there
is screaming. The songs have a clean beat and nice guitar work as they
pursue a path somewhere between power ballad, screammo, and power pop
in the land of alternative rock. The lyrical poetry laid down on top
of the music is youthfully abstract and themes on the shards a relationship
can produce are brought forth by the strong tenor voice of Tyson Stevens.
