Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Jan 4-11, 2005

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, hey, hey-
I just got home from the Playhouse Board meeting. The Playhouse is in serious financial trouble again. We are going to start having rummage sales and pancake breakfasts, and all the things we can think of to raise a bit of money. If you have any ideas or can invest some time to help this community landmark let me know. I will use this forum to discuss ideas over the next few weeks, some of which will involve the music community. The playhouse is the main reason we stayed in the desert after we left LA; the children’s plays and activities. If you are not a member of the playhouse guild, please consider joining and getting involved. It takes involved folks to make it work.
Check out the attachment 'put your voice where your mouth is'. Also, my good friend Spencer Brewer, of Redwood Valley is selling a lot of good outboard gear. I have attached his list and contact info.
May the tsunami victims and survivors find peace and harmony.
Dat’s all for now…
THEATRE 29 SETS AUDITIONS FOR "THE APPLE TREE"
Auditions for Theatre 29's production of "The Apple Tree" are set for
Monday, January 10 2005. Anyone interested in trying out for a part or
volunteering to be part of the stage crew, is invited to be at the John
Calveri Theatre, home of Theatre 29, at 7 pm. The director, Catherine
Stanton, is looking for a medium sized adult cast (11 - 20
people). Performance dates
for this production are Friday and Saturday evenings from February 25th
through March 26th, with an additional Thursday evening performance on March
3rd and a matinee on Saturday, March 19th. The practice schedule is Monday
through Friday evenings through January and February. In part, the cast
consists of Adam, Eve, The Snake, a Balladeer, Princess Barbara, Captain
Sanjar, Ella/Passionella, Mr. Fallible, and Flip, the Prince Charming. All
are expected to sing.
"The Apple Tree" - From the songwriting team of "Fiddler On The Roof" and
"She Loves Me" comes a unique evening of three one-act musicals about men,
women and a little thing called temptation. The first, "The Diary Of Adam
And Eve," is a quirky, touching spin on the tale of the world's first
couple, adapted from Mark Twain's "Extracts From Adam's Diary." The second,
"The Lady Or The Tiger?," explores the fickleness of love in a rock and roll
fable set in a mythical barbarian kingdom. Finally, "Passionella" is based
on Jules Feiffer's offbeat Cinderella-story about a chimney sweep whose
dreams of being a "glamorous movie star" nearly sabotage her one chance for
true love. Witty, tuneful and utterly charming, these fast-paced,
tongue-in-cheek musical miniatures are modest in production requirements and
filled with the warmth and humanity that is the hallmark of Harnick and
Bock.
The John Calveri Memorial Theatre is located around the corner from Barr
Lumber at 73637 Sullivan Road in Twentynine Palms. For more information
contact Brian Tabeling at 367-9338.
Thanks for this info !!! A friend up in Pioneertown used to live there and
knows people who are still missing. Such a tragedy...MR
Steve,
If the engineering community and the general public would get their head out of the silicon and go back to fundamental phycics, earthquake disasters could be prevented. Also hate and violence could be had and world peace could exist. Farmer Gates & Fanny have a musical comedy show which explains it all for everyone.
Hello, friends of the desert,
The Morongo Basin Conservation Association will have several openings on their Board of Directors at the end of this year. We are looking for people who would like to help make a difference in the future quality of life in the Morongo Basin by serving on the Board.
The Board meets 10 times a year (no meetings in July-August). The term is three years.
This is a time of change for MBCA, and by serving on the Board now you can help shape the organization and determine the environmental priorities for our communities and wildlands locally. We are especially looking to include on the Board more members from the West Basin areas (Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Morongo Valley, Landers, etc.).
It you think you might be interested, or would like to recommend someone, please contact us here by replying to this message.
Thank you!
For the environment,
Christine Carraher
Member of the Board, MBCA
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, "Crushed nuts?" No," he replied, "arthritis."
