Temecula Food: Spuntino’s Pizza serving up an authentic slice of Italia
November 18, 2008 by Jeney Kingsbury.
In a town that has a pizza place in every center, you have to stand out among the competition. You have to be authentic Italian with just enough commercial American and exotic intrigue. And you have to serve a damn fine pizza.
Even though I am mostly of Irish decent, I am irrationally drawn to Italian food like I am returning to my homeland. Having originally stopped at the Baron’s shopping center to get coffee, we found ourselves walking into Spuntino’s instead.

Spuntino’s Pizzeria and Delicatessen is wedged between a Subway and a Starbucks at the head of a beautiful courtyard. Inside, Spuntino’s is dual purpose; serving customers pizza, fresh salads, and sandwiches, as well as grocery items of dried pasta, olives, wine and much more. The front of the store houses the delicatessen, sliced meat and cheese, cold salads, fresh breads, and the salad/sandwich center. The real wood fire pizza oven is in the back, with about six or seven wooden tables curving through the middle of the shop. Along the side by the register is the Italian grocery.
On the menu you will find a multitude of options. From Pizza Bruschetta, bruschetta on a wood fired pizza crust (my all time favorite pizza), to Pizza Wurstel, hot, tomato sauce, mozzarella and oregano, you are sure to find the perfect pizza. Along with the usual pizzas, Meat Lovers, Vegetarian, Margherita, there are quite a few unique and exotic toppings like smoked salmon, anchovies, peas and French fries. If pizza is not what you are looking for, try one of the many types of salads, pastas, sandwiches or a calzone.
Finish off your meal with some strong Italian coffee or one of the many fresh desserts. Our table ordered Lemon Chello Sorbet and a Mocha Sorbet, both were exceptional. In my homeland if pizza were a place, Spuntino’s would now be the Capital City.

‘THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING TO REMIND ME’
Temecula, CA – With no real scene spot having developed as a gathering point, sometimes you just have to ‘follow a band’ around to see what’s cracking. So it was with me this past week. I started with a free show featuring Peter Puffington & TRSE, and The Elm Street Rockers, as good a place to begin as anywhere. Both bands were appearing over @ Aloha J’s. It was a show put on by Ruckus Riot (Jeremiah) with sound by Capt. Kirk.
PP&TRSE opened with their raw rocking style to the ‘early’ crowd before TESR showed their chops as a band that could be anyone’s ‘house band’ by putting on a tight music set with the whole group playing in a ‘groove’. Trust me Grant, it was appreciated. Sound was excellent but loud; of course, ‘if it’s too loud, you’re too old.’ The Tree Fingers set was cancelled, which was a shame, but it was time for the club deejay to take over as the ‘late’ crowd slinked in. But from the Thursday night Aloha set, I learned that Peter & the group were doing a Battle of the Bands thing at The Merc, as part of Full Value Entertainment’s ‘Live’ on Fridays series and to enable the filling of band slots for the Music Fest to be held in May of next year. BTW, PP&TRSE came in second in the Friday night competition.
At the Thursday (Aloha) show I also learned that The Elm Street Rockers (who I hadn’t seen since a theme party out at the Compound where everybody is now sick or sick of) were playing a spot I first read about in the Valley View, a place called, The Secret Location. Shhhh, shuddup! So at the Merc last night, who do I run into, but the owners of ‘The Secret Location’. Damn I love it when a plan comes together. While talking to the couple and finding out just where this ‘secret’ location is, and how it is operating under the radar, I found out that the couple are entertainers, have toured before, done club operations, and are from Indiana.
We talked of Indiana becoming ‘blue’ for the first time ever, with the huge metro area of Indianapolis swinging the whole state. Well, Sports Fans, my first ex-wife lives in the state of Indiana. So does my oldest son, Peter, yep, another Peter in the family. It’s very possible that my middle son’s mom has returned to Indiana, and my close friends know that my youngest son, Jaryn, his sister, Jazmyn Blue, and my last ex-wife also live in Indiana. Talk about ‘Shades of, All My Exes Live In Texas, That’s Why I live In Tennessee.’ Meanwhile back at the ranch, The Chain, Plastick, and PJ Otaku are joining The Elm Street Rockers at this All-ages show which starts at 7PM and has a $5 suggested donation, plus it is the wife’s birthday celebration party, but it’s a secret. Shhhh, shuddup!

WHAT DO JENEY, IVAN, CHARLES, SUMMER, RUPERT, MURDOCH HAVE IN COMMON?

ALSO A FEW “I TOLD YOU SOs”
Temecula, CA – Most people know that there are things out on the west coast, aka LA, that are different than most other places in the USA, besides the 61% who voted Obama. If you happen to be in the LA area known as Santa Monica, which is actually north of LA proper, you can go to Lincoln Avenue and at 2316 you will find 25,000 square feet of custom made sofas. That’s right, Sports Fans, all the names mentioned in the main title are custom made sofa names. The Sofa Company at 2316 Lincoln makes and sells over 50 custom made ‘named’ sofas. The huge factory have been LA’s largest custom sofa making factory for over 10 years and unlike a lot of ‘US’ companies, all their products are made in the U.S.A. An extra benefit, of sorts, is that if you have an ‘ex’ you don’t like, you can design your own sofa and give it your ‘ex’s’ name, so you can put your butt in your ‘ex’s’ face, so to speak, each time you sit down to watch some TV. Ah, revenge is sweeeeeet! (Call 1.888.778.SOFA or www.thesofaco.com. Of course, I would never do something like that, but on to my sub-title part of this article.
Several months ago, I wrote a story on why Al Gore didn’t deserve the Oscar for his doc on global warming. I felt this way because he had only told half the story by leaving out the part that told of the reduction of the sun’s rays hitting the earth’s surface which is actually global ‘cooling’, a kind of ying/yang effect. Treating one without treating the other could have disastrous effects. Well today on MSN (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27704012) what I said, lo those many months ago, was echoed in the story on ‘brown’ clouds. And, just today another story that I reported on, the closing of Mervyns here in T-town, which was edited out of the rest of the article about two other local closings, was indeed verified and validated by a large banner stretched across the front of the store’s front entrance. While not one to say ‘I told you so’, well, as Stewie would say, “I Told You So.”
