Remember, Remember the Fifth of November
November 4, 2008 by Matt Pierce.
We know the fifth of November to be the day after elections this year. In England, the fifth of November is Guy Fawkes day. Ah, yes, the joyous holiday created to honor the man who in the 17th century attempted to overthrow the king and destroy the houses of parliament using 36 barrels of gunpowder in what was coincedentally known as the gunpowder plot. After the death of queen Elizabeth, the catholics of England had hoped for somebody who would be more tolerant of their beliefs. Unfortunately for the catholics of the time, Elizabeth’s successor, King James, was not planning to be tolerant of those Catholics. When Guy Fawkes, a mercenary, returned from wars abroad, he and a few friends (12 to be exact) decided that violent action and a revolution were the answer to the problem at hand.
The conspirators gathered together 36 barrels of gunpowder and hid them underneath the house of lords in a cellar. But Fawkes was the one man doing the dirty work for the conspirators. A warning letter was sent to Lord Monteagle warning him of the gunpowder plot, and to stay away from the houses of parliament. This letter made its way to King James, and he arranged for his guards to stop this plot. Guy Fawkes was found with the 36 barrels of gunpowder early on November 5th, and was hanged later that day. Bonfires were lit that night to show the people of the king’s safety. To this day, the monarch of England only enters the houses of parliament once a year, and the basement is scanned thoroughly to ensure that no plot is in place. Each year this day is celebrated with fireworks, and the burning of a effigy of Guy Fawkes upon a bonfire. Though, quite a few of the English tend to question whether they celebrate Fawkes’ execution or his attempt to do away with the government.
I will end this with a quote, and one that I feel is appropriate for today. It is taken from the movie V for Vendetta, and is spoken very simply, and yet very powerfully by V.
“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot….

Crime: Four Marines arrested in the murders of Winchester couple
November 4, 2008 by Bill Gould, Publisher.
Winchester, California - On Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at 930am, deputies from the Sheriff’s Southwest Station were dispatched to a residence in the 31000 block of Bermuda Ave in the unincorporated area of Winchester. The call for service was requested by the employer (USMC), because the male at the residence had not reported for duty at Camp Pendleton earlier that day. ![]()
On arrival deputies found the front door of the residence ajar. The deputies entered the residence and located the occupants of the residence bound and gagged in the family room, the apparent victims of gunshot wounds to the head. Deputies immediately checked for signs of life and determined the victims were deceased.
While clearing the residence for other potential victims the deputies noted that some areas of the residence had been ransacked. They also noted that there appeared to have been an attempt to light a fire inside the residence, in an apparent effort to destroy evidence. The fire was very small in nature and was unsuccessful in destroying potential evidence. Investigators from the Southwest Station, the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit (CHU), and Cal Fire arson responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Based on the evidence immediately observed, CHU assumed the lead role in the investigation.
The victims were identified soon after the onset of the investigation as USMC Sergeant Jan P. Pietrzak (white male, 24 yrs), originally from New York, and his wife Quianna Jenkins-Pietrzak (black female, 26 yrs), of California. The couple, who had moved into the Bermuda Ave home approximately four months prior, were last seen alive in the late afternoon / early evening hours of Tuesday October 14th. Numerous items of evidence were processed at the scene and have been submitted for DNA and fingerprint analysis.
Investigators began talking with relatives, associates and co-workers of both victims to establish timelines and determine a possible motive for their homicides; however, no clear suspects or motives were immediately identified. Based on a further analysis of the crime scene and available facts, investigators believed there were multiple suspects involved and there existed a high probability they were linked to Sergeant Jan Pietrzak’s background at Camp Pendleton.
CHU investigators quickly joined forces with investigators of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), who had opened their own investigation into the crime, and began searching Sergeant Pietrzak’s background for possible motives and suspects. CHU, Southwest Station and NCIS investigators worked tirelessly and subsequently arrested four Marines for the murders of Jan Pietrzak and Quianna Jenkins Pietrzak.
During the course of the investigation, investigators served numerous search warrants at locations on Camp Pendleton and in the surrounding communities. The searches resulted in the seizure of numerous items of evidence linking all four suspects to the murders. All four suspects provided confessions of their individual involvement in the murders. The motive for the murders appears to have been financial gain. Two of the four suspects worked in the same unit as Sergeant Pietrzak, and all four were assigned to Camp Pendleton. During the investigation, the investigators have received the full cooperation of the Marine Corps.
The suspects have been identified as Private Emrys John (black male, 18 yrs), originally from Maryland; Lance Corporal Tyrone Miller (black male, 20 yrs), originally from North Carolina; Private Kevin Darnell Cox (black male, 20 yrs), originally from Tennessee; and, Private Kesuan Sykes (black male, 21 yrs) from California. John, Miller and Cox were taken into custody by NCIS and are presently in custody at Camp Pendleton. Sykes was taken into custody by CHU and is in custody at the Southwest Detention Center.
On November 3, 2008, investigators presented the facts of the investigation to the Riverside County District Attorney’s office. After a review of the facts, the District Attorney has agreed to file murder charges with special circumstance allegations on all four suspects including a charge of sexual penetration with a foreign object against Kesuan Sykes. Arrest warrants will be issued for the arrest of John, Miller and Cox, and investigators will request the Marine Corps release them to the custody of the Sheriff, to be prosecuted in Riverside County.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigator Josh Button or Sr. Investigator Gary LeClair at Sheriff’s Central Homicide (760) 393-3500, Investigator Jesse Martinez at the Southwest Station (951) 696-3000 or Special Agent Art Spafford of NCIS at (760) 725-5158.
