WHY 2 WRONGS MADE 1 WRIGHT, one mans story of race in America

WHAT MAKES THE ‘NO-SPIN’ ZONE AN ALL-SPIN ZONE
I’ve often wondered just what color the sky is in Bill O’Reilly’s world, ‘cause it sure ain’t the same color sky in my world. In political big stakes elections, like the upcoming Presidential party nominations, you expect the drudging up of embarrassing people, speeches, and comments to be used in slinging mud on the opposition. So the comments made by one Rev. Jeremiah Wright years ago being used to ‘tar and feather’ Barack Obama by his opponent for the job, Hillary Clinton, should come as no surprise. Politics is a dirty game; remember Richard Nixon’s plumbers and their ‘rat-fucking’ tactics? However, when all the so-called political pundits start crucifying Rev. Wright for using his free speech and branding it ‘un-American’ to criticize the ‘power structure’ that runs this country, it shows the old adage of ‘shooting the messenger because you don’t like the message’ rings true in Bill’s world. Maybe in Bill’s world there is equal justice for all, with no racial/religious profiling, and the crooks are crooks because they really are ‘bad’ people. Well Bill, here’s how it is in my world, the world of Obama and the world of Jeremiah Wright.
Years ago, just after graduation from high school, I applied for a job over the phone that I had seen advertised in the ‘help wanted’ section of the local newspaper. I talked to the business owner over the phone and told him my qualifications. He liked the high school I had graduated from; it was over a hundred years old but had been integrated just three years before. In fact, he so liked my enthusiasm and stated abilities that he hired me on the spot over the phone. I got dressed up and preceded to go down to the office for what seemed just the formality of a slam-dunk. I was elated at getting my first ‘real’ job right out of the starting blocks. So I can tell you that when I walked in the front door, proudly, and with the attitude of becoming the best office manager he would ever hire, only to see the look on his face when he realized that I wasn’t as white as I sounded over the phone (think ‘articulate’ for a black man), I was so mortified by the hurt from the shocked expression of this man that I could not even bring myself to relate what had happened when I came back home to my parents. They never knew the anger and frustration I felt that day, but Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a man I never met, does know, perhaps because many of his congregation expressed their anger and frustration to him at their being relegated ‘to the back of the economic bus’ regardless of their posture, their smarts, their manners, or their upbringing.
The speeches or sermons that seem to surprise Bill and his friends, the political elite, don’t surprise me. Anyone who has ever been to a black church with a fiery minister, especially in a large urban area that is mostly black, has heard the same accusations spewed from the pulpit. You can hear identical sentiments voiced at any, repeat, any black barber shop, regardless of the size of town. Dr. Martin Luther King, who was gunned down on this date 40 years ago, uttered many of the same indictments about this country and its true nature which are often disguised in bullshit rhetoric or unknown to people immersed in the status quo, people like Bill O’Reilly. The outward racist sore that was so prevalent 40 years ago may have scabbed over but it hasn’t healed up or repaired itself, just look at the ‘Jena Six’, the reaction over the April Vogue cover, or the comments made about the Oscar® best picture ‘Crash’.
Maybe in Bill’s world black folks should be thanking their lucky stars they get to live in the ‘white man’s country’, but in my world folks of all colors just want this country to live up to the promises made by the Founding Fathers. Obama highlighted three problem areas in his speech about ‘race’ and Rev. Wright’s sermon comments. If the ‘no-spin zone’ was truly that, Bill would have focused on the cause of those problems and not dragged Rev. Wright around the TV community behind his verbal pickup truck. Bill O’Reilly took Rev. Wright from the back of the bus and threw him under the bus.
