TEMECULA’S PRODUCTION OF ‘THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES’ ISN’T X-RATED, IT’S L-RATED

PLAY IS EARTHY CELEBRATION OF WOMANHOOD’S GROUND ZERO

Temecula, California – Director Patti Drew and her Temecula Valley Players presented Eve Ensler’s controversial and brilliant play, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ in dress rehearsal last night at the Old Town Temecula Community Theatre. Anyone and everyone who attends tonight’s performance are in for a thought-provoking treat. Get there early for the reception and snacks because once the play starts, your mind won’t be on food.

To date this ten-year old play has raised more than $50M and helps support safe houses for abused women around the world, including one here in Temecula. The Monologues come from a series of interviews conducted with women as young as 6 and as old as 90. These women were asked directly about their vagina, what they thought of it, what it would wear and how they would dress it, and what it would say. Some of the funnier skits dealt with these answers from the various women, but other skits, like ‘Say It’ which deals with Imperial Japan kidnapping upwards of 200K girls to service their troops during WWll (‘Comfort Women’). Their refusal to apologize to the survivors, some as old as 90, even to this day, validates John Lennon’s famous quote. The brutalization of women, especially young women, outside of the crime arena, continues unabated as at least 28 countries continue the practice of circumcising or removal of the clitoris as tradition, in unsanitary conditions to boot and then there’s war.

But all the very personal accounts don’t just center on the two masks of Janus. And this is where some light is shed on the ‘mystery’ of the vagina. Skits like ‘The Flood’, ‘The Vagina Workshop’, and ‘Because He Liked To Look At It’ show the inner psyche of women to be opposite of the ‘right out in front’ attitude of men. The ‘bearded clam’ hides its mystery but radiates its wonder at being the starting point of all animal and human Life on the planet. The Vagina Monologues Lift the ignorance from your mind through frank, well written, first person short essays that reveal what it’s like to be in and around the very essence of womanhood that was created by God as a gift to Adam and Eve.
