LATEST VALLEY NEWS TABLOID SHOWS NO SCENE OR DOES IT
Temecula, CA – The latest Valley News ‘valley scene’ listing shows no more all ages shows going on anywhere, no Cloud 9, no It’s A Grind, except for Gateway Church in Murrieta. Makes you wonder how many times collection plates were passed to get the $4 grand for the ‘required’ music show permit from that city. As investigators find out whether the church even has a permit, it seems obvious the statement by Bill Gould, that ‘it would be counterproductive for the city to close down all the music (venues) fell on deaf ears, as the lack of ‘all ages’ show listings would suggest. Ivan of Ivan Promotions also quipped that ‘they just killed’ the music scene (see ‘No More Rocking In The Free World’ VN, pg. 6, issue 1, vol.8, for both statements). But is that really the case?
Well that’s not how Charity, co-owner of CUPPY’S, feels and to prove it, she put the call out last night to all the scene-sters to come over and ‘hang out’. To answer the call, most of the ‘scene’ returned, sans music, to hang out, play Guitar Hero, and catch up with friends not seen since the crack down on the underground music scenes. It’s easier to say who was missing than who was there. MIA were Ivan, the ‘Voice of Temecula’s Rock scene; Vince of Nice Day, a band that frequently played CUPPY’S; his ex-girlfriend, Candace; Captain Tuesday, a stand up artist who got press appearing at CUPPY’S open mic Wednesdays and the ‘compound crew’ of Jamie; Bill Gould, whose FVE put on many shows at CUPPY’S, and Keirah, ‘scene darling’ who avoided the mess by moving up to Fresno with her honey-bunny before everything hit the fan. The scene morphed from the shadows to hug one another inside the warm glow of CUPPY’S amidst the happy chatter of friends reunited. Next up for the ‘underground scene’ is the benefit party, this time for CUPPY’S rather than Invisible Children or International Christian Adoptions (see Coffee News, issue 11, vol.1) happening 1/19/08.
On the other side of town, Bob Stiles of Bob’s Murrieta Pizza, corner of Kalmia & Jefferson, has thrown his hat into the new music ring by teaming with Bill Gould of Full Value Entertainment and offering an open mic night, like the one started by Bill Gould and Johnny Luvano of Cuppys in 2005. Commencing on January 24th 2008, a Thursday and continuing every Thursday. Sign-ups start at 5:30PM (951.491.9053) with performances at 7PM for the FREE show. Beer and wine is available for all over 21 and the restaurant features a full menu of tasty bites.
And speaking of ‘za’, pizza that is, Shakey’s Pizza is set to take over the old God Father’s Pizza site next to Dippin’ Dots in the Palm Plaza by K-Mart. Shakey’s has hired away BJ’s chef, cha-ching, and is expanding the original area to make it more of a gourmet eatery, a first for Shakey’s and something new for the valley.
And speaking of ‘uptown and upscale’, for those who like the best in eats, Frankie’s Seafood and Steaks is the place to savor mouth-watering tasty dishes in subdued lighting (done by our friends, Lighthouse Electric). My first visit there yielded a fillet minion so tender you could cut it with your butter knife. This is a great place to take a serious date or the wifey for St. Valentine’s Day. Hummm, hump!
