BASEBALL AFICIONADO HITS THE ROAD TO CATCH AMERICA’S PASTTIME
Hello readers, my old friend Kurt recently took a two week roadtrip to see baseball back east. Serialized for the Review, here is his first installment:
“BASEBALL” EXCURSION 2007 TRIP SUMMARY
SATURDAY – JULY 21st
Kurt flew into DSM (Des Moines, IA from California) 2 hours early (“Say What?”), and David Higdon picked him up. Out to dinner with Craig and David, and then we watched an excellent baseball documentary about the Brooklyn Dodgers named “The Lords of Flatbush”.
SUNDAY – JULY 22nd
Took our time getting organized for trip as I am an aficionado. We watched two movies: “Devil Wears Prada” and “Little Miss Sunshine”
MONDAY – JULY 23rd
Drove to CHICAGO and arrived early for White Sox vs. Detroit game (7:10PM). 5PM: Parked in church parking lot near stadium ($20). Canvassed the outside of park, checking for available scalper tickets; no luck. Went to ticket window, thinking we would get Monday night discount prices. Instead, we paid premium rates because it was a game against division rival (got cheap seats just to get in stadium - $25 each). Seats ended up being pretty good for upper deck, and it wasn’t crowded. Before the game, we checked out the murals on stadium walls showing White Sox players and their highlights through the decades. Weather was perfect – 74 degrees or so, low humidity, and no rain. Excellent game with 29 hits, super defensive plays by Sox CF, Detroit came from behind to win 9-6. Walked back to parking after the game; Kurt realized he had lost his prescription sunglasses in the stadium. Back to the stadium lost and found; personnel handed my glasses back to me within 10 minutes (really quite AMAZING, when you think about it). Back to parking lot, we were last car in lot except security guard that was just getting ready to lock the gate, our only exit, whew-not locked in. We dodged a bullet early in the trip.
After the game, we drove to South Bend, IN into Eastern Time zone, losing another hour. It’s late (1-2AM), but tomorrow’s activities don’t start until 10AM.
