CUPPY’S/JAVA JO’Z STAYS OPEN DUE TO SUPPORTING CAST
I often talk about the ‘scene’ and tell my readers that the ‘scene’ isn’t just about music. Music is everywhere in this valley, at the wineries, at the quilt festivals, at the rod run which did turn into a ‘spectacle’ when they had their own ‘Rodney King special’ back in the 90’s. But with all the music around, there is only one new music scene, and that scene turned out in force to raise money for Cuppy’s at their ‘rent party’ on Saturday. Johnny with his ‘all you can eat’ barbeque and all day show raised $2058 through the patronage of 207 people, and when you add the ‘regulars’ and all the bands, that equals a grip of folks. Even F.O.M.A.A. made an appearance during the ‘shank of the evening’, but by that time the night’s ‘drama’ had passed like a So Cali rainstorm and the joint was jumping, so no one noticed the board members as they mingled in amongst the revelers. Before I reveal the climax of the evening for me, let me return to the beginning of the day to when an ‘angel’ suggested that I change my plans to leave town for the day. So I stayed in town and at Cuppy’s, with all my friends, posse and great weather. I’m glad I did!The show started on time with a focused but slightly ‘purritated’** Johnny setting the pace, as the volunteers and workers gathered to start holding down the fort. In attendance was Amanda (barista-in-training) followed on the night shift by barista-ette Abby and her cheery smile, Codi (the stage roadie), Crystal (barbequer of dogs and buns), Captain Tuesday, Charles (go-to-guy), Franny (barista through the week), Niki Mouse (doors) wearing a clean borrowed Capt. Tuesday chapeau, Jourdan, and scene factor Keirah. Sorry if I left anyone out. I rolled in about 1PM, the start of Violent Eden set and just before Bluester. Through the front glass VE looked and sounded in top form but the crowd was light. A few more people joined in the room for Bluester, who improve on every outing and looked more and more relaxed on stage. Though a ‘new’ band, the trio has a unique stage presence in that all the songs show a strong bass line and a very talented bass player. Also the band did a new song titled, ‘A Hundred Miles’ that Is their best song to date. As this band starts to grow musically by crafting good songs, it takes on a pale mirror image of the night’s headliners, another band with a strong bass line presence that is writing some good new songs. After Bluester was Vince Chiofalo, who formed Nice Day. Nice Day is another reason why this area supports a scene. I worked with Vince back in the day when we opened the Murrieta Best Buy before the turn of the century. To see someone you know ‘birth’ into being an artist, then grow into knowing his awareness as an artist, to me is like watching a sibling graduate college. To see Nice Day (and you have plenty of opportunities just check here) live, is to know the reason they were chosen to open for rock greats, Fog Hat, here in October (keep it here for the details on this breaking music news).
