Car thief found hiding in Murrieta trash can

Murrieta, California - On August 23, 2007 at approximately 9:08 a.m., Murrieta Police Officer Steve Whittington received a LoJack hit on his police vehicle’s LoJack unit near the area of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Margarita Road. The LoJock hit indicated a stolen vehicle equipped with a LoJack anti-vehicle theft system was in the area. A computer check showed the stolen vehicle had been stolen in the City of Lake Elsinore the previous evening, and the vehicle was described as a yellow Ford F-250 truck.

Murrieta Police Officers used other department equipped LoJack vehicles to isolate the LoJack hit to a residential neighborhood just north of the City of Murrieta off Clinton Keith Road and Smith Ranch. At 9:19 a.m. A Murrieta Police Officer located the vehicle parked on the 25000 blk. of Country Walk. The officer witnessed a suspect climb out of the stolen truck, and detained the suspect at gun-point while waiting for a back-up officer. Just prior to the back-up officer arriving on scene, the suspect ran northbound onto Loring in an attempt to avoid arrest. Officers chased the suspect and lost sight of him when he ran in-between two homes on the 25000 blk. of Loring.

A parameter was set by Murrieta Police Officers with the assistance of Riverside Sheriff Deputies from the Lake Elsinore station. A neighborhood resident provided information indicating the suspect ran into a specific house located on Loring. Officers contacted the residents of the home and briefly detained them while searching the residence. While searching the yard of the residence the suspect was found hiding in a trash can by Officer Whittington.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Southwest Riverside County Detention Facility for vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest.
