BAND LOCKS ITS CHAPTER UP AT THE VAULT: RYAN MUDD’S LAST STAND BETTER THAN CUSTER’S
July 14, 2007 by PT Rothschild.
Temecula, CA - On a Friday the 13th, a supposedly ‘bad luck’ day according to tradition, the Temecula/Murrieta valley new music scene exploded into the night as three shows at three different locations went off the charts. Sound Promotions and The UnderGround recording studios (French Valley) pumped up the volume for two local bands at their newly built stage facilities. The hardcore scene was well represented according to new ‘scene floaters’ Bill & Jeney & Apryl (FVE). When asked about the sound levels, Bill remarked, “There ain’t no noise ordinance up there. It’s going off!” Meanwhile down the hill at ‘JJz by night’ (Cuppy’s, Murr-ville), the rockabilly music scene was heating up as tall stiff blond pompadours took the stage to the honky-tonk beat. Scene reviewer Summer Holiday, yes folks, her real name, was at that scene. But for me and my bicycle, there was only one show in town, the last stand of Ryan Mudd, and The Stuff, from Ivan Promotions and The Vault.
Ryan Mudd, a rocker since at least the age of 14 when he wrote his first song, has gained a reputation, a look, and an intensity that is uniquely owned by this band and their ‘star’ frontman. The reputation stems from the raw lyrics about sex, ‘she gave me head’, and the punk’s world view, which drive his fans, a highly visible group of platform shoes, dyed ‘Liberty’ spikes, tats, leather, bald patches and cotton candy colored hair, into a frenzy. Fueled by energy drinks and aggression against the visible society, the outcome can get a little hairy if not contained in a .38 Special kind of way (‘loosely’ for all you musically challenged with no 80’s repertoire). The sign outside that said ‘no moshing’ or this or that was turned around for most of RM’s set but once again, the very able security team, take a bow, Todd, controlled the flow. Stuff fans tend to want to f**k stuff up, that’s their reputation.
The Stuff’s look is rather comfortable ‘off-Hollywood’ but less you think that most of the punks at RM’s last stand made it a ‘sausage party’, guess again Poindexter. Ryan Mudd’s look is a combination of ‘Bro’ clean done punk style with an honesty that adds sincerity to his intensity. That intensity includes taking off his shirt going into the third song of a set that had a ‘front porch’ feel to it, sent the bevy of hot looking female fans into an Elvis spin, yeah you too K-Rock, and put the crowd in the palm of the band. When the lead guitarist told the stage front audience that he would be soon moving out of the area, twenty pairs of hands reached in through the blue lit fog effect and helped to play his next solo. Even Bill, that scene floater, wiped his brow at the rise in room temperature as he smiled while filming the RM&TS last set for FVE-TV. Outside later Ryan sold off all the remaining Ryan Mudd and The Stuff gear and CDs on SOS Records (no relation to T-town’s anti-quarry group in any fashion) to the largest bunch of punks outside of Hollywood. Even the ‘Free Beer’ kids, the unofficial ‘We Hate Ryan Mudd’ fan club came out for the last chance to see their anti-hero, exchanging some call-outs in the parking lot before the set and ensuring that Ryan would have the proper attitude before taking the stage. When asked why the end of The Stuff, Ryan answered, saying ‘we haven’t written any new (tunes) for a long time, we’ve gone through maybe 10 different members, it’s just time to do something else, something new. I need to start a new project.’
“So Ryan (Mudd) isn’t leaving music then?” asked Bill, the night’s scene floater, at one of the many after parties. I was happy to answer ‘no’, as you hate to see talent and charisma leave the new music scene. And speaking of leaving, we segue to the (again) ‘last’ show of SpaceMan Jack, a band from the pioneer days of the music scene, aka, MySpace BC. Having played the original ‘last’ show at Aloha J’s, in a night of mixed crowd Indy music lovers and disco drinkers ‘lookin’ for luv’ when John left for a teaching gig up north, what a year ago (?), the boys are again mixing it up crowd wise as they go out in style (this time Tim is leaving the area) at the Trevi Entertainment Center located in the $12M renovation of the old K-Mart building on Mission Trail over by the Casino in Lake Elsinore (yes!) presents the SpaceMan Jack CD release party amid Skinnie Magazine (and their girls) and the Budweiser Girls ‘on location’. Also scheduled to perform are Nice Day and Violent Eden. The admission is free but it is 21 and up with a strict ‘no cholo’ stylin’. Any questions, call 951.674.6080, Homie.
Besides the SpaceMan show Saturday night, FVE is throwing a music show in T-town at the CRC (Community Rec Center) and The Vault finishes up its double barreled show weekend with Jupiter, The Trade, and War Stories, among others. The scene has expanded beyond my capacity to cover it all. I love it!! LIVE FREE AND LISTEN TO LIVE MUSIC!
