On the road with Burke: Excuses, excuses, excuses…

Written By: Burke

The South, USA - Alright, so, yeah, I’ve done a lousy job keeping up this blog lately. Sorry about that, really. But I’ve got a really good excuse, exactly what you think it is: for the last couple weeks I’ve done nothing but cycle, cycle, cycle. Pedal, pedal, pedal. All. Fucking. Day. Long. Well, alright, I take that back. I actually did have two or three days off, two or three days in which I didn’t have to spend twelve hours a day on my bicycle. And I must confess that I was so damn wiped out on those days that all I did was sleep and watch a little TV. I guess I shoulda spent a little time on those days updating this blog. But, damn, I was tired.

The last few weeks of this tour I didn’t plan so good. I booked the shows so that I had just barely enough time to get to them by bicycle, which means that damn near every one of my waking hours is spent either riding a bike or playing a show, and, of course, of those two activities, the ratio is about 95% bike-riding, 5% playing a show.

On the road with Burke: Just one beer, and all of sudden I’m a lot less stressed…

Wichita, Kansas - Damn, that title makes me sound like I’m an alcoholic….I’m not, really! (You thinks I protest too much?)

But, really, it’s more than just the beer. It’s that the one beer I just drank (a PBR, free to those performing) was drank at Kirby’s Beer Store, in Wichita, Kansas. The thing is, I’ve discovered that it’s pretty much impossible for me to be stressed out while in Kansas.

On the road with Burke: F’d in the A by Grey

Written By: Burke

Wichita, Kansas - Right now I’m sitting in a McDonald’s. It’s pouring rain outside. I arrived in Wichita on a Greyhound bus, from Phoenix, Arizona. Like most of y’all know, I’ve been using bus and train now and then to assist me on my bike tour. But before I even got on the bus in Phoenix, I had decided that in the future I was going to do my best to not use Greyhound (or Amtrak) anymore. On the tour so far, I’ve used Greyhound three times, because I’m still getting the hang of booking and planning a tour by bicycle, and I didn’t plan the first month or so of the tour as well as I should have, and I wound up with some gigs booked that would have been impossible to make it to in time with the use of only bicycle, so I’ve been forced to turn to bus and train for assistance sometimes….but my gig-planning skills are improving, and from here on out I’m doing my best to space the gigs apart in a manner to ensure that I’ll have enough time to make it to them by bicycle. Which is just fine with me, cuz at this point it seems like using Greyhound or Amtrak is MORE work than riding a bike, at least as far as my situation is concerned….
