Temecula, California – As some of our readers may be aware of, there is a disagreement going on in the Temecula Valley area, or more accurately just south of town, about a proposed quarry project that has created quite a dust cloud of controversy. Newspapers, TV News and even one of the valley’s free print mags have weighed in on one side or the other of the matter. So it was no surprise when my publisher, Bill Gould, called and asked me if I wanted to go with him to dig up the true facts for our readers. The following article, pictures are video is what we discovered about this issue that is gripping southwest Riverside County, Rainbow and Fallbrook.
After parking at the local branch office of Granite Construction Company (GCC), a business since 1922, we met Karie Reuther, the
Director of Community Affairs for the last year and a local resident here of seven years. Our driver of the big red Chevy Suburban is Mike Beaver, from Hemet, who has been with the company for five months. We get a packet full of technical stuff, but I won’t bore you with the details. The Readers Digest version of Mrs. Reuther’s presentation is this: Because of proposed housing construction in San Diego County and new highway construction, demand for concrete and asphault has outstripped supply. At present up to 1500 trucks pass through on I-15 South with a portion of them stopping in the valley for all the new housing and pretty strip malls going up here, and the remainder going on to San Diego. It is a double whammy because the single supply of concrete materials comes from Corona, Irwindale and Indio - meaning trips back and forth all day long along the 15 freeway.
