AN HISTORIC SUPER BOWL

A SUPER BOWL FIT FOR MY GRANDFATHER

I am the man I am now, because of my grandfather. He set a quest before me when he gave me his history. He told me of the time in this country before the nation was divided along racial lines by law. Then he told me of how it was after. By the time I came along in the clan, things, in the town where I grew up, were a lot more civil between the colors. A separate ‘but equal’ prevalent colored subculture existed along side the predominant ‘white’ Southern culture, though it was the same in the Northern big cities. Within the subculture, a mirror of the same conservative ‘white’ values and strata of society existed with the same relative freedom for those inside it. Only in the arts did equality break through tradition. Music was a strong breakout contender still on the sidelines. Sports were just starting to expand beyond baseball, the national pastime. In those days the ‘glass ceiling’ for blacks and other non-whites, was that they weren’t physically built or capable of certain things that ‘whites’ inherently by design (having a lighter skin color, non nappy hair, straight hair, and thin facial features) were destined for. This had been ‘proven’ by a battery of flawed tests done in Vienna but passed on to the general population as ‘fact’. It would be at the end of my grandfather’s time that the truth would come out and things would slowly begin to change. In manly jobs these would be jet pilots, astronauts, quarterbacks, and pitchers. Well we have all seen those days go by the wayside as people of all color, and pretty much all religions fill these job career roles. So as this year’s Super Bowl is played with two, not one, non-white head coaches I hope my grandfather is looking down from Paradise and appreciating the progress made in this grand experiment of a nation of people who want a better life. It is a fitting contrast to the racially themed Southern college frat parties that ridicule a side of Afro-American culture that blacks themselves should ridicule instead of support. But in matters of race, blacks tend to be more like their Jewish brother (remember Shem, Ham, and Japheth?), stiff-necked, rather than casual about cultural ribbing, as in the case of BORAT!, a Jew making fun of country (All the ‘stans’ in that enclave of the world) hick Muslims. I know Muslims who laughed about it and others who saw it as I did. All I can say it that since God made possible everything we see and are, variety, now called ‘diversity’, is the order of the day, even today the two head coaches are two different shades and complexions. It is truly a game fit for my grandfather to watch and since we lived fairly close to both cities with friends/family in both, it’s too close to call as to who he’d root for. Me? Well, I have an Ex-wife that lives in ‘Nap Town’ so (Da Bears) I’ll just keep (Da Bears) my opinion to myself (Da Bears) in case she might come across this column (Da Bears).
