Of the countless artists that have created and shared their music with the world via the electronic highway, Shake Some Action! are quickly becoming legends. Indecently good guitar rock, international recognition, loyal support – and all before a full album has been officially released.
Well here is that album – January 16th 2007 is the date Shake Some Action! will release their self-titled debut, with a pre-release show on Saturday December 23rd at the Crocodile Café in Seattle (see overleaf for details)
Shake Some Action! cut through the dross of modern over-production and formulaic ‘packaging’ to create guitar pop of the highest order. Music for purists, for those who have graduated from the 60s British Invasion characterised by the urgent energy of The Beatles and The Kinks to the quirky, post-modern 80s groups such as The Cure and The Stone Roses. Music for those who know nothing beats a great melody and a tight band performance. They make it sound simple, but Shake Some Action! have truly mastered a tough art.
Shake Some Action! is the brainchild of James Hall, former leader of prodigious internet group The Jeunes. Hall grew up in Australia with a passion for music and songwriting, having had an epiphany watching the Beatles on television aged 12. By 2002 he had moved to Seattle, Washington, and his iron will to succeed in a group began to take shape. The Jeunes were soon established as an internet force, attracting attention and gaining recognition. Renowned DJ and producer Jyoti Mishra became their number one fan when he downloaded their songs, the group and DJ solidifying an artistic partnership when he remixed a track for their first EP. Such a collaboration, as Hall describes: “illustrates how the internet levels the playing field and allows independent musicians great opportunities.” The Jeunes, spearheaded by Hall’s songs, certainly capitalized on these opportunities on the Seattle music scene, before personal differences saw the group disband. Hall returned to the drawing board, working on unfinished songs at his home studio.

From solo toil, playing every instrument on the initial recordings, Hall saw that a new group had to be created. Reunited with former Jeunes guitarist David Bos, he also recruited The Scheme drummer and bassist Chris Campbell and Gary Miller. The resulting album is certainly worth the wait. The album’s pre-release show is at the legendary Crocodile Café, and is hosted by influential Seattle website ThreeImaginaryGirls.com. The band will be sharing the stage with other Seattle favorites BOAT and Patience Please.
It looks set to be a big evening for both group and fans – one of those ‘I was there when..’ moments in future music discussions.
“The music is hook-laden, lush and timeless. After a few listens, you will be utterly smitten with this band.” – ThreeImaginaryGirls.com
Aside from the British influence, Shake Some Action! have also had worthy comparisons to the Hoodoo Gurus, the La’s and Teenage Fanclub. The variety of songs and influences in their upcoming self-titled debut is quite incredible for a new group. In fact, a stand-out feature of the music is the variety within each song. The melancholy of many of the lyrical themes is married to cheerful, bright instrumentation and melody in the vein of the Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice and countless 80s tracks by REM and The Smiths. James Hall accurately describes this internal variety as: “like peeling an onion, revealing more and more with repeated listens.”
The track ‘Sound Of Your Mind’ has already gained critical attention, receiving radio airplay on legendary Seattle station KEXP and described by the Seattle Power-Pop Blog (8/5/06) as: “a strong, poppy track that will no doubt jump out of the pack when the record is released.” |
