Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Dec 13, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
Well, there are a lot of comments today, so I’m not going to talk for long. As I’ve been working, for the last two weeks, I’ve been archiving DAT tapes of Festival recordings to DVD. Some of it goes back to 2002. The stuff sounds incredible. It’s playing is the background while I’m editing this list together tonight. I’ve gone through about 24 hours of recordings so far, and I’m about half done. I don’t even record all the shows I mix, I’m too busy most of the time. I think I should make it a point to always try to record shows from now on. The stuff I’m editing now is so good, such beautiful performances, it would be sad not to ever hear them again. That’s the thing about a live performance, it’s a moment in time. It can be the most intimate connection between artist and audience, but when it’s over, it’s over. I know I do things when I’m playing live that I would never do on a recording. Even if something is lame, it goes by in a performance and is forgotten, unless it is spectacular, like that girl lip syncing on Saturday night live to the wrong song. She will always be remembered for that. I bet she wishes that show had not been recorded. The problem is even if something in a live performance is wonderful and heart stopping, it also goes away when the performance is over. I think life is the same. The things that an artist leaves behind when she leaves the planet are like recordings, even if they are not audio events. The works, the friends, the writings, the impressions left are like the recording of a live show. I strive to make my live show worth recording.
Thanks to everyone who helped out and sent their best wishes for the SPRC third anniversary. It is alive and growing.
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
The current show at The Hi-Desert Playhouse is the perennial Christmas favorite, “A Christmas Carol”. Complete with live orchestra and a large cast this faithful rendition of Charles Dickens’ story opened on Friday last and runs up to Christmas.
The cast is led by veteran actor Shep Sanders as Ebenezer Scrooge. He looks and acts every inch the part and his performance alone would be worth the price of admission. More than once his portrayal reminded me of that of the inimitable Alastair Sim as Scrooge in the 1952 London Films version. He is ably supported by the rest of the cast, all of which gave very workmanlike performances. I especially liked Howard Glenn-Rawley with his Richard Burton version of Jacob Marley, Aaron Appleby as Bob Cratchit, James Goyette as Fezziwig and others, Sue Kelly as the Housekeeper and David Shook as a wonderfully effete Topper.
This is a very entertaining show and is worthy of being seen by a large audience. Just make sure you are one of them.
“A Christmas Carol” is on stage Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons through December 23rd. For information and tickets call the Hi-Desert Box Office on 366-3777 or go to hidesertplayhouse.com …Graham Williams
That’s quite a compliment coming from someone who knows cute babies as well as YOU! :) How are all your babies/wife/you doing? Funny timing, BTW, I was just dl’ing some old pics from web.archive.org - which pulls up stuff from long-gone webpages, like the old joshua-tree.com page. There was a nice pic of you there.
Okay, things are work are slow, so I’ll write for another minute or two… I hear Don’s doing well with his music - lombardo that is, he and I caught up the other day. What else is going on in your neck of the woods? Did the fires spare most/all our old friends? I hear Palladin Video was coincidentally wiped out by a fire, which is so odd and sad. Also, I’ve heard so many people have died in the past few years, I’m dumbfounded!
Well, that’s enuf blabbing for now. Maybe I’ll see you on my next visit out west.
Be well, my old friend, J(eremy)
Dear Friends,
Many of you know my dear friend Anatoli “Tolya” Kuular. For nearly a decade, he was a member of the famed Tuvan ensemble, Huun-Huur-Tu. He played the byzaanchi, and dazzled audiences with his fantastic khomus (jaw harp) playing and his extraordinary borbangnadyr (one of the most challenging of all throat-singing styles), and with his beautiful, sweet “regular” voice.
Tolya has been a great friend to me over the years, and one of my main throat-singing mentors. So, many of you who are my students have indirectly learned from this great singer.
Sadly, Tolya is in serious trouble now. His ex-wife, Aliona, had been battling alcoholism, and sadly lost the fight one night this fall, when she passed out and froze to death on the streets of Kyzyl, Tuva. This sent Tolya into a deep depression, during which he got into a fight at a local arts school, stabbing a security guard.
This sad story has had terrible impact on two families (Tolya has a young daughter, Arzhana), with one father hospitalized and the other in jail. Hopefully, the injured man will recover completely, but hasn’t yet, and Tolya is facing a severe prison sentence.
If you are unfamiliar with the artistry of Anatoli Kuular, here are a couple examples. The first is a video of Tolya singing his spectacular borbangnadyr style, accompanying the harmonics of a Tuvan stream: http://khoomei.com/videos/Tolya.mov
And here’s Odugen Taiga from Huun-Huur-Tu Live #2, featuring Anatoli on lead vocals, amyrgaa (hunter’s horn, sounding like a rutting elk), and jaw harp: http://www.khoomei.com/mp3s/Odugen_Taiga.mp3 This is the single most gorgeous example of Tuvan music that I’ve ever heard!
Last year, many of you contributed generously to Shengne Ashka-ool, the young Tuvan girl who was being treated for brain cancer. Together, we raised about US $1,500 for her, and I hope that we can do at least as much for Tolya, who has touched so many of us over the years, and for the injured man and their families.
I am organizing a collection to help both families through this tragic time, and hope that you will contribute generously. You can either send $$ via Paypal to bigsky@bigskyrocks.com marked FOR ANATOLI or send it via mail to:
Skysong Productions, Inc. P.O. Box 11755 Minneapolis, MN 55411 USA
Thank you for your kindness,
Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity.
“Patriotism” is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by “patriotism” I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one’s own nation, which is the concern with the nation’s spiritual as much as with its material welfare-never with its power over other nations.
Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one’s country which is not part of one’s love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship
. — Erich Fromm (1900-1980), U.S. psychologist.
