Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Dec 6, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
Well, I’ve been out digging up water pipes all day. Now I am nursing a sore neck and back. Yoga tomorrow morning should take care of it, though, if I can make it through the night. What fun, though, to work through some really hard project.
It is hard to believe that the Thursday Night Songwriting, Poetry, and Rhythm Club (SPRC) show has been going for 3 years. Tomorrow is our anniversary. The idea for the show came into my mind at a JT Shakers rehearsal. The Shakers got together every week to drink some whiskey, visit, and create some interesting music (the importance of each item listed is not necessarily in that order, but could be). I thought it was so much fun that we should share it with our friends, and get them into the act. That idea never exactly panned out, but instead, evolved into the current format. The creative community the show has spawned is the best I’ve been involved in. Here is a little thing I wrote about it last week (I think I quoted myself in the ‘comments’ section) “The Thurs (SPRC) show is a musical family, a little community of folks doing the yoga of creating and performing and observing ourselves in the process. I really consider it more of a workshop than a show. We are learning from each other how to refine our art and our performance.”
I am so grateful to the Water Canyon for giving us the environment, and so grateful to the artists that make up the SPRC family. There is nothing like sharing your dreams and your creations with a supportive community. You are the best!
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
Thursday, Dec 7, 2006 Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band
7 pm Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band They sound like Robert Johnson on crack… they get one hell of a sound out of an acoustic guitar, washboard, and snare drum. It’s easy to see why they are big…
Friday, Dec 8, 2006 Radio 60
7 pm all your favorite hits from the 60’s! 70’s too!
Saturday, Dec 9, 2006 The Shadow Mountain Band- Ben Vaughn’s Desert Classic- & The Sibleys
4-6 pm The Shadow Mountain Band! Folk/hillbilly/Americana. Shadow Mountain specializes in mountain-style harmonies with lively acoustic backup. They feature traditional mountain music, hillbilly gospels (think- oh Brother, Where art Thou) and bluegrass, along with eclectic originals.
730:  The Sibleys: What the Sibleys play is spare, moody music carved out of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Sort of like the Velvet Underground minus the New York attitude, with a beautiful blond female singer who can, at times, turn a better lyric and can always carry more of a tune than Lou Reed and Nico combined.
after the sibleys:  Ben Vaughn. Composer. Producer. Recording artist. A man the Village Voice describes as having a “sound so pure and spontaneous it sounds instantly classic.” Be it sitcoms, TV commercials, film soundtracks or radio play, somewhere in the world right now, Vaughn’s music is being heard.
Sunday, Dec 10 the thriftstore allstars
We know that there will be lots of talk on the Rickie Lee Jones/Thriftstore show, but we wanted to mention THE WONDERFUL ALICE & ALBERT & FRIENDS SHOW on Saturday at THE BEATNIK. What a beautiful gathering of all ages and all levels of A&A’s students, Samantha (vocals and Banjo), Brita(guitar) with Allison(vocals), Brita and friend(A&A’s guitar student) Ray Duff did a lovely set, Mark Hughe’s did some wild picking and singing. Alice and Albert were joined on Harmonica by their friend from the East Coast, Dennis Farley who has played with the likes of Pete Seeger. What a fine time was had. Linnea and Autumn did a set with A&A and Linnea had her vocal debut doing the truest, most original version of HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN under the fabulous direction of Albert Williams.
What GREAT teachers Alice and Albert are, what an honor to share the stage with all these folks, Thanks Sam for helping us REALLYSHOOO’S out there at the end after coming in from mike Mucklow’s show and as always what a perfect ending to a perfect evening - Alice leading us all through “GET TOGETHER”.
Thanks Ellen & Billy Reallyshooo
*PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (useful info)*  If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don’t know it exists.
I (Al) got big laughs out of some of these:
Once again, The Washington Post has published the winning submissions to its yearly neologism contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words.   The winners are:
1.  Coffee (n.), the person upon whom one coughs.
2.  Flabbergasted (adj.), appalled over how much weight you have gained.
3.  Abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
4.  Esplanade (v.), to attempt an explanation while drunk.
5.  Willy-nilly (adj.), impotent.
6.  Negligent (adj.) describes a condition in which you absentmindedly answer the door in your nightgown.
7.  Lymph (v.), to walk with a lisp.
8.  Gargoyle (n.), olive-flavored mouthwash.
9.  Flatulence (n.) emergency vehicle that picks you up after you are run over by a steamroller.
10.  Balderdash (n.), a rapidly receding hairline.
11.  Testicle (n.), a humorous question on an exam.
15.  Frisbeetarianism (n.), (back by popular demand): The belief that, when you die, your Soul flies up onto the roof and gets stuck there.
16.  Circumvent (n.), an opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.
The Washington Post’s Style Invitational also asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year’s winners:
1.  Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating.  The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
2.  Foreploy (v): Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
3.  Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.
5.  Sarchasm (n): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it.
6.  Inoculatte (v): To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
7.  Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.
8.  Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
9.  Karmageddon (n): it’s, like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right?  And then, like, the Earth explodes and it’s, like, a serious, you know, a real bummer.
10.  Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
11.  Glibido (v): All talk and no action.
12.  Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
13.  Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you’ve accidentally walked through a spider web.
14.  Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
15.  Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the apple you’re eating.
And the pick of the literature:
16.  Ignoranus (n): A person who’s both stupid and an asshole.
Witches In Bikinis Warm Up N.Y With Upcoming Winter Dates
Witches In Bikinis
Witches In Bikinis
Horror Flick Chicks
Witches In Bikinis
Video Vixen Vampire
  After electric performances at the “Witches In Bikinis 2nd Annual Halloween Ball”, “The Witches Ball” at The Delancey, and “The Village Costume Ball” at The Theater for The New City, Witches In Bikinis has confirmed two more dates this winter, with many exciting new projects, including a second CD to follow.
One of the most provocative and devilish acts in east-coast performance – though its members hail from all over the US - Witches In Bikinis has been wowing audiences for a little more than a year. Their anniversary, however, has them showing no sign of slowing. The group will be rounding out the year with two more shows in and around New York : Emergenza Music Festival at The Hook in Brooklyn on December 9th, and the Pussycat Lounge on Greenwich Street , New York on December 16th.
Some may say if you have not experienced six talented young women singing and dancing in bikinis, witches capes and bright-colored wigs, backed by a tight, four-piece band performing original glam-rock songs, you have not really lived. A fair point: Witches In Bikinis is an incredible act; as unforgettable as they are alluring. They are a performing arts collective brought together by the song-writing talents of leader Bill Rozar and singer and director Janelle Lannan. For the last 20 years Rozar, just for fun, has been writing rock and pop songs inspired by B-horror films and sci-fi movies from the 50s and 60s– until 2004, when his wife Julie encouraged him to record an album with Lannan. By mid 2005, a full coven of performers had been assembled, and their debut CD was released that October.
Witches In Bikinis have played all over New York gracing, among others, Don’t Tell Mama, Galapagos, Mo Pitkins, Bowery Poetry Club, R&R, Southpaw, and Kenny’s Castaways. Their songs leap from stage and speaker, catchy and none-too-serious. The fun and campy quality of the music belies the sophisticated and well-crafted lyrics, melodies, and arrangements—which is why, as the group points out, “So many people who hear our songs cannot get them out of their head.”
Artists of substance, each witch and musician brings their own background and musical influence to the cauldron, mixing pure pop, rock n’ roll, theater, jazz, and modern dance. More than anything, Witches In Bikinis is about fun. They are edgy, surreal and sexy, but never offensive. Reviewers were quick to ‘get’ their genre-smashing style. Michael Dale at Broadwayworld.com described them as “Spring Break in Transylvannia”. Frank J. Avella for nycool.com wrote of their music: “poppy/rocky tunes that pay homage to the Supremes, Frankie and Annette as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show… entrancing, infectious and scare-a-licious!” Stu Hamstra at cabarethotlineonline.com called the act “enchanting and haunting…lots of fun.”
Next outlet
  Witches In Bikinis now have plans to create a musical, a logical next outlet for their mix of theatre and music. A second album is also expected in 2007. For now, the group is taking over New York, ever widening their fan base.
The group is a must-see this winter and into the New Year. See below for their upcoming gigs and contact information, including an awesome myspace site:
