‘Something Real’ – the MEG & DIA CD Review
The very first time I saw MEG & DIA perform, it was up in Fullerton, CA, at a place called ‘The Alley’ and a FVE show. They were the first band and opened the show, paying the dues that ‘first’ bands sometimes do. The sound was shitty and it was around the last song or two that the real vocals started to be heard. I was blown away by the dramatic interpretation and stage presence of the whole band. Kenji Chan’s parents had driven down from Tustin, a neighboring town in the large mega-city known as Orange County. Their son had recently joined the band, for the tour, the band’s first. His guitar and energy were the perfect match for the band. Later when I listened to the ‘Our Home Is Gone’ I was completely hooked on MEG & DIA.
For most bands, coming up with a song that has a hook is the name of the game. For a very few bands though, their sound, the song lyrics, and just the texture of the tunes are unique enough to defy the odds and still catch your ear. MED & DIA is just such a group. For all those who have never seen the girls and their band mates live, you can still experience some of the ‘magic’ of M&D through their first Doghouse Records release, ‘Something Real’. Fresh from this year’s Warped Tour as the Official MySpace House Band, a genuine accomplishment when you consider there are over 130 Million people on the site. Billboard Magazine rated this ear-pleasing CD as having “ultra-catchy songs with plenty of attitude …” For me it is the combination of the vocals’ sound, the solidness of the band, and the way both are wrapped around the inimitable nature of the songs these sisters write. Three originals from the first CD are included (‘Indiana’, ‘Masterpiece’, and ‘Nineteen Stars’), reworked a little, and they join 8 other works, two of which will bring a smile to any diehard M&D fan, ‘Monster’ and ‘Setting Up Sunday’, one of the prettiest songs you’ll ever hear. Their myspace comment page shows plenty of fan testimonials and is pretty interesting to read. It will give you an insight that is backed up when you hear the first rate production quality of this initial outing that brings out the best in these fresh songs. Now MTV is catching on to MEG & DIA!
