MOVIE BUS INCAHOOTS WITH BAND BATTLE

INCAHOOTS WITH IVAN PROMOTIONS
This movie bus adventure centered on Ivan, since he was the one who was invited to be a band judge by Susan, one ‘T’ of TnT Productions in Riverside, CA. Grabbing some breakfast at Alberto’s, gassing up with the café racers and sub-contractor pick-ups, we (Ivan, Timmy [stills], me, and Jamal [video], who drives his own car) hit the road under clear blue skies and fall temps. It seems more of a business trip since this is a sausage party.
Ever the professionals, we arrive early the venue, INCAHOOTS, and promptly secure a prime location. The bus stands to the side of the club facing the street and shows the spray painted ad side. The venue is more of what you think of when you think ‘night club’. First, it is huge. You could fit The Whiskey and The Roxy (downstairs only) both in the place and room left over to line dance. The ample stage faces the room, a large dance floor ringed by a dance rail with tables on two levels beyond that. A large outside patio sits on one side of the large parking area. Behind the stage area are two side rooms that house games and pool tables. There are fire exits on every directional plane. In short, INCAHOOTS has a perfect venue/club layout. On the ceiling is an impressive array of track and spot lights, topped off with a rotating glitter mirror ball suspended above the center of the dance floor. The judges, Ivan, Photo Bob (who bears a striking real life resemblance to Comic Book Guy but is better groomed), Keith (Dinky Music Recording Studios, one of the sponsors), and Robert of West Coast Rock School, a school that puts you into a band while they give you music lessons so they can critique both your playing and performance, are centered at the back of the stage, seated at the dance rail which doubles as a long table. Susan was the Master of Ceremonies and the sound guy was named Chris. The bands are to be judged on: Originality; Music Ability; Stage Performance; Best Song (for which the band front man recites the lyrics before the song is played); Crowd Response; and Ticket Sales.
The Bands this week –

1.        Us 4 President
2.        Tear Gas
3.        A Sinners Prayer
4.        Armada
5.        Crost
6.        Toxic Ruin
7.        Adrena
8.        Cries Of Heaven and Hell
9.        Drenched In Blood
10.     In Retrospect
-          Us 4 President – a 3-piece skater punk rock with guitar, drums, and bass/vocals. The rhythm section was tight and the band of 2-3 years had just changed their name from Abandoned Riot because the drummer wanted something that said ‘Vote for Rock’. They did just that.
-          Tear Gas – A five day old six piece punk band ‘straight off the ashtray’ of Mo-Val dressed for the cover of ‘Teen Scream’. They had a lot of heart, spiked heart.
-          A Sinners Prayer – nothing special about this pedestrian band.
-          Amada – the most personable band so far with a female front man who has good range of her strong vocals, backed by guitar, bass, and drums, all guys. The guitar offered up some nice FX and the goodly sized crowd they brought appreciated it.
-          Crost – in the vein of Mötorhead, with double lead licks, bone crunching rhythm, and a lot of long brown straight hair tossing. Head-bang anyone?
-          Toxic Ruin – a band that impressed Ivan while I was out for pizza.
-          Cries Of Heaven and Hell – they got their fans going for some hardcore dancing with angry music that ‘bros’ love.
-          Drenched In Blood – the guitar, guitar, drums, hole-in-the-jeans speed metal looking/needing a bass player band.
-          In Retrospect – a little earlier drama had tired out Ivan so he missed the proverbial ‘save the best for last’ band. Brandishing good original songs played well by the three members doing the classic rock/blues stance of guitar, drums, and bass, each doing some stand-out rock solid music line proving the ‘less is more’ music theory. Their ‘best song’ lyrics besides being spoken were also handed out on flyers, showing the layout of the song ‘Foolish Games’. The judges agreed with my ears and IR took the top prize.
Although the band battle is weekly, it is unlikely that the movie bus will return to INCAHOOTS before the semi-finals, sometime next year. After all, a Renegade Rock show in your neighborhood could be ensuing and you wouldn’t want to ‘miss the bus’. One final note on the show, all the groups used the same Yamaha drum kit, provided by TnT, to reduce set-up and tear-down times between acts.

Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Nov 15, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
I tell you what! I saw two good shows Saturday night.  The first one was Janet Robin at the Water Canyon. Janet had her accompanist with her, who played a Gibson Les Paul and was excellent, (unfortunately, I can’t remember his name). Kelly Hagen opened the show, and was great, with a clear voice and strong original songs  (www.myspace.com/kellyhaganmusic). Janet’s show featured special guest vocals from Eve Buiges (www.myspace.com/jariyamusic).  She is a singer from a French band that is touring and presently camped in LA.  They are doing some dates in LA with Janet and brought a little bit up of that up to do for us.  It is definitely the first time I’ve heard French rap in the water Canyon.  Janet was at the top of her game, playing both acoustic and electric and singing strongly.  She did some solos that took my breath away.  She had a fair retinue of people who came up from LA and Orange county, so we had a full house.  Still, I remember thinking that I wished more local musicians were present.  Even more that I had a recorder running! Oh well.  This was a show that would hold up in any venue, anywhere.  I’m so happy it happened right here at home.
As Janet’s show was ending, Josh Hemingway called and said there was a good band at the Beatnik.  On the way home I stopped to hear what he was talking about.  There was a very good band from Santa Cruz playing.  They were playing a laid-back combination of RB and reggae, very listenable.  They had a solid rhythm section, a killer keyboard player, and a very sexy lead singer (female) with great moves.  I can’t tell you the name of the band because they never mentioned their name during the time I was there, but they were good.  You can probably find out about them on the beatnik website.
All in all, after listening in on John Whitock’s show Friday night, playing hillbilly music at Harriet’s place Saturday afternoon, and then having this great Saturday night, my musical cup runneth over. To top all that off, I just found out that Robyn is bringing Rickie Lee Jones in to play at Harriet’s.  Please don’t wake me up.
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
Liberal’s Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives
November 14th, 2006
To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters,
I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week’s election. You’re worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don’t want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled. You are in a funk, and I understand.
Well, cheer up, my friends! Do not despair. I have good news for you. I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress, have a pledge we would like to make to you, a list of promises that we offer you because we value you as our fellow Americans. You deserve to know what we plan to do with our newfound power — and, to be specific, what we will do to you and for you.
Thus, here is our Liberal’s Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives:
Dear Conservatives and Republicans,
I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:
1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you “unpatriotic” simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.
2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be “different” or “immoral.” Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love — it’s a wonderful gift.
3. We will not spend your grandchildren’s money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It’s your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.
4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.
5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we’ll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.
6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.
7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.
8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.
9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren’t much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.
10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you — and your employees — that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.
11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don’t put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs (”Blessed are the poor,” “Blessed are the peacemakers,” “Love your enemies,” “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God,” and “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn’t just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism — starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.
12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.
I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans — and for the rest of the world.
Signed,
Michael Moore
