Hey, Hey, Hey-

The Cosmic American Music Festival-

I’ve got to give a big pat on the back to Jon McKinney.  This year’s Gramfest had the best music yet.  More of the bands got the idea of playing to the room, not just for themselves.  The theater is a live room created for spoken word type performances.  Bands that play too loud create a mush that is impermeable to the ear.  This year there were only two bands during the whole weekend that I had to leave the room for, that’s pretty good.  They were actually good bands, just too loud to hear properly in that space.  The group that had the best response and the biggest crowd of the festival was Berkeley Hart from San Diego.  It’s a pair of great singer-songwriter’s with a lot of humor and soul.  They’re perfect for the theater because they do their show in the old style with one mike in the center the stage.  When folks realized how good they were the packed-in audience became quiet enough to hear a pin drop.  I was able to leave the sound booth and go down in the audience and sit in a theater seat, almost unheard of in my profession. It was an especially high point among three days of high points.  I want to sincerely thank John McKinney for making it happen.  It’s a gift from him to us.  I appreciate it.

The Phelps blinding light controversy

There are two kinds of people competing for the desert sky at night.  Folks who like dark skies and stars and folks who like bright lights at night. I don’t understand the second type, and I don’t judge them, but I wish that they would choose someplace else to live.  There are plenty of places with bright lights on all night.  You can probably guess my preference, I’m a card-carrying Dark Sky Association member.  Here is a reprint of a letter I wrote to the editor of the high desert Star two years ago when Yucca Valley was going through another lighting crisis and came up on the side of dark skies:

Yucca Valley’s Lights

I like the dark. During the night I look out at the stars. I seem to find some kind of meaning in the stars, although I can’t write exactly what it is I feel. If I could, I don’t know if it would make very good copy, certainly not as good as in a new car ad or a TV spot for a Vegas casino. Nevertheless, I came to the desert out of LA in 1971 for the sky; the almost every day blue sky, and more, the night sky. My family and I sleep out under the sky when the weather is nice (as it is at least half the year). I love the desert; I love the sky; I don’t know if I could separate the two things.

What I don’t understand, and I say this with complete respect for others’ views, is why anyone who doesn’t love the environment here and spend a fair amount of time outside would want to live here. There are well lit cities everywhere, mostly with economies that are much easier to make a living in. I make about one third as much money as I made in the city and most of my friends also make less than they could in other areas, but we live here for the environment. If you ask around, I think a lot of people would say the same. Why would anybody who actually spends time outside here want to pollute the desert sky with light at night (or anything else, day or night). Why would anyone who did not spend time outside here want to live here?

Are there any statistics on night lighting making people safer? A policeman friend of mine said that yard lights only help crooks find their way around at night. I feel very sorry for those who huddle in their homes at night with their yard lit up like a prison yard. I also feel sorry for the energy wasted and the beautiful, restful dark ruined for the neighborhood. If there are bad guys in the bushes waiting to grab you the minute the lights go out, you have created an unfriendly world for yourself. Perhaps it’s time to rethink some of your basic attitudes. If you require thousands of watts of light to conduct your business so as not to miss a sale at night, perhaps you are forgetting where you are.

Perhaps I, and others like me, are living in a dream world. We are definitely under-represented, maybe too busy looking at the sky. Be that as it may, I appreciate the Town of Yucca Valley taking up our case for quality of life. May the stars be with you.

Dat’s all for now.

Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.

Da prez

It’s about taste-

While driving home from the town council meeting tonight (at which a large group of angry citizens waited to hear from Mr. Phelps, a no-show, about just how and when he plans to comply with the town lighting ordinances), I had a very pleasant experience. As I left Yucca Valley “proper” on Highway 62 and entered the bordering empty spaces of Joshua Tree, it got sparklingly dark. Only a few, dim streetlights lit up the highway, and it felt so quiet and peaceful.  I was struck by the immense and awesome beauty of this dark place. I thought to myself, that’s what everyone was so angry about this evening, the idea of giving up this beautiful treasure that people in cities have lost forever. There’s no going back for them. And we don’t want that to happen to us!

What I did notice, though, was that there were some businesses in Joshua Tree, and probably many, many more in Yucca Valley, that had their business signs brightly lit up, but they were closed. The owners had gone home to their, hopefully, dark and peaceful neighborhoods and left an eyesore on the highway for all to endure until morning. Is this really necessary? (I did notice, though, that some business owners were considerate enough to turn off their signs when they went home. I surely do appreciate that.) I mean, why would I need to know a business is there if it isn’t open?  I guess the owners consider it advertising. But, wouldn’t a small, unobtrusive light serve that purpose just as well as a large, gaudy one? Where is your taste, people?  It’s so much more classy to be subtle and understated. Anyway, please everyone, turn off your lights at night. Take a long, leisurely look. It’s gorgeous out there! ..Darlene

I hope you guys got your message out !!! I deal with similar issues related to endangered species all the time in my job. Somebody’s got to save the world !!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Give em hell Stevo! The rats came into our small town and destroyed the night sky before we knew what was happening. And our night sky was nuthin like yours! The company I work for wanted me to get lights installed on 2 large signs on the side of the factory, they said “just point some lights at it from the ground”….I stood toe to toe with my boss and his boss and said “I can make that sign look fine with down lights that won’t ruin the night sky”…….I did and it looks fine :) Like Gahndi said “what you do may be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it” peace and respect brother, see ya at JT next year, Robert Kelly
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The note I got from Harry Bowkley said the meeting was TONIGHT….thought I had missed it.  Tomorrow night is the Jazz Blues…..so I’ll be a little late to that….this is more important.  You’re right - solidarity in numbers…..this time, I’ll write it on my computer and try to NOT stay away from it.  I was on-line a record 6 hours today…. and counting. JVR

thank you steve. From judy vr’s earlier email, i thought i’d missed it.  ted

Can’t be there, but I’ll surely call and express my opinion!  I’ve just spoken to Jeannie Lindberg at the Town hall, and I will be sending info to Morongo Valley’s General Manager to have something read into the record at the Planning Commission Meeting tonite on behalf of the MV community…Carol

Hey, hey, hey…

Da Prez has moved w/o da proper advice.  The call to arms is:  absolutely untrue.  Neil Phelps is requesting additional time TO BRING THE LIGHTS INTO CONFORMANCE.  No variance is being requested.  They are asking for more time to bring the lights into Town conformance with the code.

In Spirit, Ramon

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read the agenda, Ramon, (Phelps is trying to get the town to give him 150 days to bring the lights into compliance). Ya wanna look at those monstrosities for 150 days??  Da Prez don’t even want ‘em on! Period!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The issue is that they meet the code or soon will.  All else is mute…so go and hear them okay the time to request  meeting the standard.  Size of the lamp does not matter.  What does matter is to work within the system or change it.  I too want to change the standard.  Going to the meeting to bitch about development is like asking congress to stop wasting money.  Truth in why we are supposed to go is the issue.  What was put out was not true! …Da constitute!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the meeting, Darlene felt that the town was not favorable to any variance, even temporary, and that they would not be turned on ‘till they were in compliance with the code. That is what government is about.
