Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Sept 13, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
Well, I was blogging my butt off before the 2000 election and the aftermath, then again in 2004. I just couldn’t believe the ‘party of corporate greed’ was able to convince the public to vote against their best interests. By the brilliant use of propaganda and Orwellian doublespeak, the current administration is, once again, in the process of making black into white for the unfortunate U.S. (read:us!).
Here are a couple of quotes from last weeks comments:
“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” — George Orwell
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly…it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.” — Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister
I don’t think that I will get into the thick of it again. If America is stupid enough to let a few wealthy white men with big egos and divisive issues and propaganda lead it over the cliff, then ‘cest la vie’. I do wish to register a few points before shutting up, though:
!) The people running America at the highest levels today are not defending us from terrorists, they are the reason we are the target. Unfortunately, the world knows that idealogues, just like fundamentalists, cannot be reasoned with.
2) If half the money spent on the ‘war’ was used to fix problems in health, infrastructure, and social problems like poverty, both here and abroad, there would be a different world today. Heck, though, the corporations wouldn’t make near as much money!
3) Our government is controlled by people who actually believe that they will magically be lifted out of the fire and rain that they are bringing about because they are the chosen ones. This includes the environmental devastation they are licensing as well as their military crusade and the wasting of the hard-earned assets that rightly belong to the next generations. The rest of us, not being allowed into their pathetic vision of heaven, are condemned to go down with the ship. I find this just as insane as the afterlife promises made to suicide bombers. We are one, baby! When this planet goes down, we all go with ‘er.
The highly publicised tv special about 911 is now re-writing history. The good guys are now the bad guys, and vice-versa. When progressives pointed out the many total falsehoods in the piece, the (now good guys) squawked about freedom of the press. [Remember a few years ago when some producer did a special about Reagan, showing him as a (lovable) muddle headed fool (actually, that was the way he seemed to me)? Right-wing revisionists stormed the network and were able to shut down the program. It was never shown.] Now, they’re the good guys, inflamed at the very idea of repressing creative expression. Whew! These are the same guys who jumped up and down when Bill Clinton shot missiles at Osama BL. They said he was trying to distract us from the Monica scandal. Now the story is changed so Clinton had no interest in OBL while the good right-wingers were trying to point out the danger. Sorry, I know you have all the cookies, but I was there, and watched it go down. I know you will threaten us with death and destruction, as well as baiting the religious to keep voting for you. You are destroying the best country and government in existence, and will probably get a vote to continue doing so. Nevertheless, you are a sorry and foolish leadership for such a once great country. Shame on you!
I don’t intend to turn the JAMS list into a political forum again, I just had to get it out of my system. I just love my family, my town, my country, and my planet so much. I’ve just been thinking about it and had to say it one more time. Coulda been a hell of a scathing protest song, eh? (hmmm)
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
Pioneer Days Musicians Sought The 70th annual Pioneer Days Festival is seeking musicians who would like to perform October 20 & 21 at Luckie Park in 29 Palms. Unfortunately, the Chamber of Commerce is armed with a small budget, so I can make no guarantee of pay for musicians, but I’m trying to round up some funds. CDs can be sold there and the event will be well promoted, so we should have a great turnout. We need bands for 40 minute sets, and solo acts for in between sets. For information, please zap me an e-mail at shanghaibrown@yahoo.com. Thanks! Steve Brown
Dear friends, I just want to thank you all for your kind words, prayers, thoughts, cards, flowers, and more. We lost our son Kieran on August 31, in a tragic work accident on one of the ranches he was foreman of in Texas. He was only 23, and he loved God, his friends, and his work. He was a “real” cowboy, and, as he humbly confessed, a chick magnet. Kieran had a Greek Orthodox Christian funeral service, being a former novice monk for two and a half years, and was buried on September 6 in McKinney, Texas, just across the freeway from the Rockin’ River Ranch, where he had been preparing horse trails by clearing the old highway that Bonnie & Clyde drove during their crime spree. The ranch is hopefully going to be the home of a new cowboy church and equestrian facility. A cowboy preacher was also at Kieran’s funeral, along with some well known “real” cowboys, like Punk Carter, who is in the National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame. A total of 76 cowboy churches across Texas said prayers last week for Kieran, along with services in Orthodox churches in various locations around the world. About 200 family and friends attended his funeral, and already, a newborn child has been named for him. Kieran was especially good at caring for children, the elderly and those who need special care. He was a great friend to have and chose wonderful friends to have in his life. We were privileged to meet many of them in Texas this past week. He experienced a lot of death of people close to him during his life, but he knew how to work through his grief and keep smiling. He had a smile as big as the Texas sky, and a heart to match. We’re going to miss him for the rest of our lives. If you’re the praying sort, please include Kieran, his twin sister Annelise and big brother Liam, his mom Delphine, his boss/mentor Wayne, and best friends Jason and Tessa in your prayers, if you can. If you want to make any kind of donation in his remembrance, please send donations in Kieran’s name to: River Ranch Educational Charities c/o: Frisco Horse Park
13100 State Hwy 121 Frisco, Texas 75035. That’s where Kieran was based. The River Ranch Educational Charities at Frisco Horse Park is a 501 (3)(C) non-profit organization, based in Frisco, Texas. RREC provides underprivileged and physically and mentally challenged children in Texas with classes that can help boost their confidence, strength and abilities. If you’d like to see Kieran’s obituary, it is still online at: http://www.turrentinejacksonmorrow.com/detail.php?id=1872 There is a guest book there as well, if you’d like to leave a comment. Again, thank you all for your kindness. It is appreciated deeply by myself and our family. Thank you, and all the best, Steve Brown
GOD AND THE BIKER
A biker was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, “Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish” The biker pulled over and said, “Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.”
God said, “Your request is materialistic, think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify me.”
The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, “Lord, I wish that I could understand my wife. I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing’s wrong and I know there is, and how I can make a woman truly happy.”
God replied, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?”
BANDS BATTLE AT JAVA JOZ
September 13, 2006 by PT Rothschild.
Temecula, CA - Tuesday, September 12, marked the start of the ‘Battle of the Bands’ as the first leg of the competition that will end with a December music showcase put on at the Temecula Community Recreation Center (CRC) located on Rancho Vista Road. The band, ‘Take Cover Last Resort’, from Fallbrook, CA, with members as young as 13 years old showed music fans it’s never to soon to pick up an instrument. Playing several covers first (Green Day, Rancid), TCLR, thrilled the crowd and the judges by closing the set with a catchy original tune. The second band, Down 15, a hometown crew, rocked from the other end of the age scale and showed their ‘Godsmack’ influences by melting faces through thundering originals and crowd interaction by the front man. The five piece includes the brother (rhythm guitar) of the lead singer who is the youngest 20-something member of the group. Judging was done by Jeney Kingsbury, Java Joz Johnny, and me, PT, with no Simon/Paula drama or sarcasim. For more info see August 24 archive ‘Temecula Music Fest 2007′ or the myspace site, /temeculamusicfest. More bands, more music, next tuesday.
