Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Sept 27, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
Well, not much to say tonight. I’ve been up to my, uh, ears in work. I even had to miss Kenny’s jam session yesterday. The week is not the same without it!
Jim Beam and Jack Daniels often are my companions when I put the newsletter together. Now that it has cooled off enough to taste again, it has hit me. Has anybody noticed how harsh both of these whiskeys are? When is Joel goin’ up to Montana and bringin’ back some R+R. When will I get back to Indiana and bring back some JW Dant? Maker’s Mark is OK, but it is a million $$ a bottle; grumble, grumble. Oh well…hello Jim, my prickly old friend.
Never mind! There is a lot of good info on upcoming festivals, as well as individual performances in the newsletter. It’s gonna be a good weekend. If you happen to be at the Gramfest (I hope you will be), please come up to the sound booth and say hello.
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
The Hi-Desert Playhouse is located at, 61231 29 Palms HWY, Joshua Tree, CA 92252.
A sought-out standup bassist, Tom Freund, has been added to the Cosmic American Music Festival/Gram Fest Venue and will be playing Saturday, September 30th at 11:45 pm to 12:15 am; in addition to the Sneaky Pete Benefit - Sunday October 1st from 1:45 pm to 2:30 pm at The Hi-Desert Playhouse, 61231 29 Palms HWY, Joshua Tree, CA 92252.
After concluding a summer tour with longtime collaborator Ben Harper and his band the Innocent Criminals, critically hailed singer/songwriter Tom Freund is hard at work on the follow up to his 5th independent album, Sweet Affection, released in July 2005. The 30-date summer run provided Tom and Ben the opportunity to rekindle songs from their 1992 Pleasure and Pain album. The pleasure of that experience has led to the two working together on new music and planning more tour dates in 2006.
I am currently working on locating either free or discounted lodging for musicians coming from out of the area. I have some hospitality for bands including drink and meal tickets. We will have a booth set up to sell CDs for you, though it’s best if you bring your own personnel to assist our volunteers. Please make yourself available to sign CDs. I will really begin our publicity push on Monday with the area press. We have received a $30,000 advertising package from Time/Warner, so we will be able to hit the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area as well as the hi-desert/Joshua Tree area pretty well. We also have an excellent working relationship with our local radio stations KX 96 and KQ 92 FM, and some of their on-air personalities will be helping emcee. I need to know the following from you: The number of people in your band, as well as any support personnel; The number of vehicles you’ll be bringing; Any special needs you may have as far as sound or lighting goes; Any other special requests you may have.
Art Kunkin talk
Steve, Here is the pdf file of the leaflet for October 1 (attached- I couldn’t get the type off the flyer-da prez). The reason it is called a method for instant enlightenment by the Tibetans is that it is a practice done at very moment of physical death to hold the consciousness (or the soul in Western terms) together so that one is a Boddhisatva regardless of what else was done in life. Just thought I would clarify this because someone today expressed surprise at the term instant enlightenment. It will be an interesting talk.
Hi Steve, Thanks for a wonderful Saturday evening. That good old time music is good any time …And, by the way, the (editorial) you wrote last week was worthy of the various complimentary emails you received. Nice balance of thought and emotional response. I, for better or worse, frequently use these editorials to vent and I learned the most personally satisfying way for me to do so from watching Lenny Bruce, not that I could even stand at the base of the first step to Lenny’s scrutiny of the world but, I guess, the method. He, like, well, going back as far as Will Rogers and up to Mort Sahl, didn’t think much of democrats or republicans but the few degrees of difference between the two parties morally forced them all to come down on the side of democrats in the old tradition of ‘the lesser of two evils’.
Paul Krasner, who really is a Lenny protégé, demonstrated that with his 1967 bumper sticker that I saw as an homage to Lenny. In red, white and blue his bumper sticker, with an exclamation mark, read, ‘Fuck Communism!’. @l
Written By: Jourdan Sales for FullValueREVIEW.com
Nice Day:
Nice day is a nice little acoustic one man band. Vince is Nice Day’s very own singer/song writer/guitarist. Nice Day couldn’t be compared to any band or singer who falls into to the famous category. But Vince’s melody does sound like Temecula/Murrieta’s Mike Evans. Not so much when he is with he back up bassist and drummer, but when Mike is playing a solo night by himself.
Mervera:
Back again for the second round, members Chris and Matt bring a new sound with them. Now joining them are their new drummer and bassist.
It is a new sound, sort of like Chris’ voice every 10 seconds into one of their songs. “His voice cracks through the songs, but they are still very good. I still enjoy coming to see them perform,” explains a close fan and friend of the band. They came barring some more covers from artists such as Blink182, Simple Plan, Sugarcult, and more. Even though they haven’t written too many of their own songs, it’s still a good show that the four put on.
Third String Calalier:
Five member band from California had very rad talent with their four guys and one chick mix. They played self written songs such as their hit songs “‘M’ Over ‘V’ “and “Kids Bop”. Their song names along with the lyrics are both fun and cute [‘M’ Over ‘V’ is just another way to write a heart]. They really brought gold with their show last night.
Rome:
They stared with acoustic tunes and continued with a great electrical performance following. Needless to say they were more than notable. Rome is full of energy and moves around a lot. Rome appreciates and prefers for the crowd to get in real close for when they perform. They are worth the money to see and you should spend every last penny.
Cavalier:
Taking a long trip from Washington, Cavalier played a really fun beat. ‘They were very uppity and I liked bopping my head!’ shares outside spectator Francis. ‘Very pop…but still a rock band, never the less,’ exclaimed another person present. Lead singer Steven asks the crowd to join in with him to say ‘Right on bro!’
They are very involved with their crowd, weather they are fans or not.
Tysen:
Even though from far away Washington, Tysen brought a whole lot of people into our snug little coffee shop [which is a very unusual thing for a band from so far away]. They jumped, swayed, and threw themselves all over the floor. Not to mention they got the crowd to do the same. Tysen sounds hardcore but at a more neutral tone of the sort. They also included a funky touch to their music with a programming machine. ‘They were way hot and so was their music! I am so going to marry the bass player guy in the gray shirt!’ explained an overly excited female fan.
Valiant:
Short a guitarist, Temecula’s very own Valiant still laid out a great show. Playing a cover of Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ and their brand new songs turned out to better than some people might have thought. Valiant aims to please their fans and have a great time doing so. This goes even when they are playing one of their slower songs which is always dedicated to their mother who favors this song for the lack of screaming in it.
September 23, 2006 by Bill Gould, Publisher.
Iggy and the Rough Riders:
Iggy and the Rough Riders brought in some great sounds to Java Joz with their punk rock magnitude. Iggy and the Rough Riders could be compared to other bands such as rancid, along with their name that reminded me Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards but with less obscurity. They did a few covers of Rancid and the internationally known song ‘What a Wonderful World’ which was dedicated to the man of their inspiration as a family and a band, Joey Ramone. Iggy and the Rough Riders also write their own songs, such as one that Iggy wrote about his son Elvis.
A Simple Ending:
Bringing in a strong crowd, Murrieta’s very own A Simple Ending played a great show. Sharing their myspace link [www.myspace.com/asimpleending] they even make room for their fans. Their songs aren’t just made up stories, but the lyrics are reflected from experiences from their own lives. A Simple Ending is a highly recommended band from all their fans that came to see them. They are very neat guys who aim to please your ears.
Skye:
Long time band Skye put on a wicked show on the 22nd of September. Without long old drummer Erik by their side, long new time member Richie made a most marvelous impression. Skye Sounds best when combining both screaming and the average vocals singing throughout their songs. I haven’t heard of a person who doesn’t like their music yet, and I’m sure that you won’t either.
Telescreen Down:
Although short one bass player, Telescreen Down still played a pretty sweet show. Guitarist Jeff Webber and Drummer Pelham Britt did very well together on their own. Songs made for no one in particular were played and were very fun for the individuals who took them in; even though one was about Jeff’s hate of televisions [hence the name of the band]. Telescreen Down’s sounds are pretty much kicked back and fun to listen to.
AN INVIEW: The Burning Man Art Festival 2006
September 21, 2006 by Bill Gould, Publisher.
By: Matt Pierce for FullValueREVIEW.com
“The Man Burns in 6 days”
We left from Temecula at the rather ironic hour of exactly 4:20 am. We had just filled up the tank on the great green beast that we were taking out to
Black Rock City, still in a dream-like state of disbelief that we were actually leaving to go to the playa. My companions until we were far past Bakersfield on our way towards the Nevada deserts slept until just outside of Reno. The drive proved to be such an endurance trial that halfway up the I-80 I was seriously tempted to say “hey guys, let’s just go back, this drive is way too long.” But then, about that time I realized, “we just drove 8 straight hours, and we’re only 6 away, let’s just go…” I talked to myself for most of the way there on the 11 hour trek. Hey, at least it kept me awake.
At approximately 2 pm, we made it off the I-80 and onto the home stretch of the Nevada highway 447 that we would drive for the next 82 miles until we arrived at the gates of Black Rock City. It was a long and trying drive. All 3 of us in the car were tingling with anticipation, and we were just so happy to be living out the dream we’d held onto for so very long. When we finally made the turn onto county road 34, just outside of Gerlach, NV, none of us could hold it in any longer, and we all screamed at the top of our lungs and jumped with anticipation. As we came to the gates, we were met by the first greeters of the event, who searched our vehicle for stowaways, as is common practice. Many people do not attend the event because the cost is at $280 a ticket and you have to pick up all supplies to feed yourself and thrive on your own in one of the world’s most harsh environments.
Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Sept 20, 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, Hey, Hey-
“Dear stev0,
MasterWriter is being used by some of the most successful songwriters in the business and has been recognized by every major music magazine as one of the greatest songwriting tools on the market today. We noticed you downloaded MasterWriter to evaluate it, but you didn’t choose to buy it. We would like to know why. Any comments via email will be most appreciated.
Thank you,
Barry DeVorzon, President”
Barry-
Nice to hear from you. I played a few sessions for you on bass back in the late 60s in LA.
I thought the idea of MW was good. Checking it out, though, it is probably a good setup for novice songwriters who need recognizable clichés for songs they are ‘trying to make up’. Personally, I advise younger musicians to learn great tunes by writers who have something to say; use these songs as a format to play with arrangements and performance styles; then, as experience collects over the years, to gather all these impressions into their own mature work.
As an older writer (not over the hill, though) who has gravitated to writing completely out of experience and from the heart, I found none of the writing aids in the program to be of the least use to me. I don’t ‘make up’ songs, I relate experiences and the lessons I received from them. I don’t need any ‘pop culture’ phrases or clichés to enhance my ideas. If I am looking for a rhyme that my mind can’t supply, my little pocket thesaurus does the job without injecting any dated or jaded references. It cost 50 cents at the used book store. I have probably resorted to it 20 times in as many years.
The program seems to be well thought out and assembled. I guess the essence of my problem with it is that I don’t feel that good music can be written in a mechanical or formulaic way. A song should tell a truth, either personal or universal. Your program is no help in that matter, either is any other. By my standards I only write a few decent songs a year; maybe one really good one in a decade. Luckily, I have another way to earn a living rather than churning out songs that don’t say anything, or worse, say untrue things that mislead impressionable folks.
I didn’t try the recorder or the song registration section. I have other means to achieve these ends that I am happy enough with. I deleted the program.
Hope this is useful…
your friend,
Steve Lester
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.

After concluding a summer tour with longtime collaborator Ben Harper and his band the Innocent Criminals, critically hailed singer/songwriter Tom Freund is hard at work on the follow up to his 5th independent album, Sweet Affection, released in July 2005. The 30-date summer run provided Tom and Ben the opportunity to rekindle songs from their 1992 Pleasure and Pain album. The pleasure of that experience has led to the two working together on new music and planning more tour dates in 2006.

Pioneer Days Musicians Sought The 70th annual Pioneer Days Festival is seeking musicians who would like to perform October 20 & 21 at Luckie Park in 29 Palms. Unfortunately, the Chamber of Commerce is armed with a small budget, so I can make no guarantee of pay for musicians, but I’m trying to round up some funds. CDs can be sold there and the event will be well promoted, so we should have a great turnout. We need bands for 40 minute sets, and solo acts for in between sets. For information, please zap me an e-mail at shanghaibrown@yahoo.com. Thanks! Steve Brown

Hi Steve-
Great editorial this morning. Thank you for your clarity. I think you should continue to publish your political ideas. After all, I think we creative people have an obligation to “tell it like it is!”
Tom
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks, Tom. At my age, and with the desire to bury myself in creative work lately, I had thought I would let the next generation take the torch. I just want to be sure they remember. Pretty soon all the stuff us older guys remember will be covered over with bullshit. I get an amazing amount of mail from (assumedly well-meaning) gullible folks who present me with right-wing propaganda as truth. It is so Orwellian it blows my mind. Some past pundit said “those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it”. Somethin like that. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate havin’ a friend out there who saw what I saw and remembers.
hi stevO
your venting was clear and organized and made complete sense. it’s nice to hear the truth now and then in contrast to all the untruths being forced upon us. i just avoid the “news” for the most part.
quotes from Sam S:
“What kind of victory is it when someone is left defeated? What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy. What is a war criminal? Was not war itself a crime against God and humanity, and, therefore, were not all those who sanctioned, engineered and conducted wars, war criminals? The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.” – Gandhi
