Gig reports and editorial comments for the week Aug 30, 2006

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hey, hey, hey-
A lot of folks are interested in the condition of Johnny Ray Martin, hurt in a motorcycle accident recently. We just talked to him today; he is out of IC and going home soon. He is in good spirits. He will be recouperating for several months with broken collarbone, ribs, face; also internal and arm injuries. He won’t be playing autoharp for awhile, but will be singing with ‘Shadow Mountain’ as soon as he feels good enough. I’ll let you know.
Earthlink is causing problems by asking for elaborate forms to be filled out to deliver bulk mail, like this list, and even personal mail. If you subscribe to Earthlink and wish to recieve this newsletter, please change services or try to fix problems on your end. I will not fill out their forms*. Other providers sometimes require a little verification that’s not too bad; Earthlink is over the top. No wonder they are going under.
It’s nice to be home and have a weekend off. See you out and about.
Happy 60th anniversary to Pitown.
*(I don’t stand in lines, either)
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Da prez
PS: Check out…JAMS Announcements by Al Murdy (another great editorial)
Also, if you are interested in cause and effect in economics, check out JAMS economic supplement. It is an article from the New Yorker (america’s best magazine). After I had read it, several friends also brought it to my attention. Since there was so much interest in this circle, I thought maybe the JAMS folks would appreciate it.
Pioneer Days Musicians Sought The 70th annual Pioneer Days Festival is seeking musicians who would like to perform October 20 & 21 at Luckie Park in 29 Palms. Unfortunately, the Chamber of Commerce is armed with a small budget, so I can make no guarantee of pay for musicians, but I’m trying to round up some funds. CDs can be sold there and the event will be well promoted, so we should have a great turnout. We need bands for 40 minute sets, and solo acts for in between sets. For information, please zap me an e-mail at shanghaibrown@yahoo.com. Thanks! Steve Brown
My truck is in need of a new engine. I have JEEP that I think just needs a starter. Working on getting them both back up and running, but meantime, don’t have transportation to all my regular nightly events. Poor Gary Sanner. All those events we are at together (yet separately) he has agreed to be my taxi. I thank him for that, but other things, well, gotta fend for myself unless there is a database for your WC audiences and groupies to facilitate them attending your events???? Just thought I’d ask!
No, wasn’t going to come tonight to WC, but would like to come Thursdays whether or not I perform and would be nice to know if there is some kind of database for help for entertainers and/or audience members.
Greetings from Abandon Ship! We haven’t sent out any news for a while. This will bring you up to date:
We released our third record, The Best Game, in January of this year. We love it. It’s our best yet. Many of you already have it already. Thank you! Special thanks to those of you who preordered it. If you preorded, you should have received your copy many months ago, so if you haven’t, it was lost in the mail. Please reply to this email and let us know!
We haven’t been playing shows for a while. One reason is that Damian has gotten a cool (paid!) gig as bass player for the British band, Cock Robin, and has been touring Europe with them. In the meantime we’re writing and arranging the songs for our next album.
We just got our first confirmed spin on LA’s NPR station, KCRW. That is very exciting–they have really cool music shows and their listeners are our perfect audience! You can listen to them online at kcrw.com. Don’t hold your breath–put in a request instead!
Here are some other, more reliable ways you can hear the new album and help us out too:
We have three songs (as well as recent photos) up on our Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/abandonshipmusic. If you do Myspace, ask to be our friend, use one of our songs as your page’s song, and recommend us to any of your friends who you think would like us.
We have every song up on CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/abandonship3. If you already have The Best Game, it would be a big help to write us a review here. If you don’t have it yet, it would be an even bigger help if you bought it here! CD Baby has a contest this month (until the end of August) with cool prizes for bands that sell the most CDs. If you’ve been thinking about buying one for yourself or as a gift, now’s the time! Also, if you have one of our first albums, you could be the very first person to review them at http://cdbaby.com/cd/abandonship and http://cdbaby.com/cd/abandonship2.
You can also find, buy and review our music on a bunch of digital distribution companies, like itunes, Rhapsody and Amazon.com. Here, too, you could be the first to review our albums!
We have a few songs from each album, a bunch of photos and all of our lyrics up on our website, designed by our dear friend and long-time collaborator, Chad Murdy: www.abandon-ship.com. Just click on the Discography link.
Love, Nathen, Damian and Gabriel
A REALISTIC ASSESSMENT OF HOW MANY 12-YEAR-OLDS I COULD BEAT UP BEFORE THEY OVERTOOK ME.- - - - Your average 12-year-old boy is about 5 feet tall, weighs in the area of a buck-fifteen, and has developed little muscle mass.
I am 21, approximately 6 feet tall, tip the scales at an even 180, and have a moderately athletic and muscular build.
Judging on these statistics and what I assume would be a natural ferocity that would spring forth in a moment of physical danger, I estimate that I could beat up seven 12-year-olds before they overtook me. Of course, these would have to be the aforementioned average-sized 12-year-olds. Future linebackers, NBA players, and all Scandinavian children would throw off this equation. On the flip side, if these were some wimpy, four-square-playing, future-jockey 12-year-olds, I imagine the number would skyrocket to anywhere between 12 and 15. It’s simple exponential math.
This is also assuming that my opponents are smart enough to organize themselves into a circular attack instead of coming at me one by one. If it were an individual, king-of-the-mountain battle royale, I could endlessly pummel 12-year-olds without mercy. But we’re assuming at least a sixth-grade education in a marginal public school as well as some exposure to kung-fu movies, so these kids would form a circle.
However, using my quick wits, I would charge one portion of the circle, landing a devastating blow on the unlucky individual, which would make the others proceed with hesitancy. One on one, I feel like I could deliver a lot of punishment to a 12-year-old. There would be one or two brave ones who would jump on my back, distracting me and thus enabling the others to attack. At best, I could fight off the two heroes on my back and maybe take out four on the ground before I was felled by fatigue and numerous kicks to my groin and shins. This would equal a grand total of seven.
My friend Brian, who stands about 6 feet 2 inches and is stronger than myself, estimates that he could take down a dozen 12-year-olds. I find this hard to believe, but he has been in a fight with people his own age and is a little taller, making groin shots more difficult. Brian’s reach is much longer than mine as well, which is a huge advantage. If you can land solid shots from a distance longer than the 12-year-olds’ legs, there is no need to worry about groin kicks.
He says he would attack one portion of the circle in a fury, scaring off any would-be heroes who wanted to jump on his back and sacrifice themselves for the group. Then he would deal massive blows until fatigue and the inevitable groin shots brought him to the ground. I told him I’d give him nine or ten, but even for the above-average Brian, taking down a dozen 12-year-olds seems like a lot.
If it weren’t for the law and my own morals, we could put these pressing questions to rest. Alas, these barriers still stand in our way.
I’m a pacifist anyway.
—-From Al
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

George Bush goes to a primary school to talk to the kids to get a little PR. After his talk he offers question time. One little boy puts up his hand and George asks him his name.

Stanley,” responds the little boy.

“And what is your question, Stanley?”

“I have 4 questions: First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN? Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes? Third, what ever happened to Osama Bin Laden?” Fourth, why are we so worried about gay-marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don’t have health insurance?

Just then, the bell rings for recess. George Bush informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume George says, “OK, where were we? Oh, that’s right: question time. Who has a question?”

Another little boy puts up his hand. George points him out and asks him his name.

“Steve,” he responds.

“And what is your question, Steve?”

“Actually, I have 6 questions. First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN? Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes? Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden? Fourth, why are we so worried about gay marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don’t have health insurance? Fifth, why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early? And sixth, what the hell happened to Stanley?”
