Gig reports and editorial comments for the week July 26, 2006

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hey, hey, hey-
Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve got the summertime blues. I don’t mean that I have any actual complaints; I’ve got a great family and a comfortable place to work, good places to play, warm and receptive folks to play for and with; actually, I’ve got everything I ever wanted. My problem is my body. It was made out of the earth of another climate. When the weather gets this hot, I retreat into myself, showing my face only when I have to. I remind myself of a gopher, if exposed to the daylight; unable to see or function properly. This wouldn’t be a problem if I could just follow nature and go nocturnal. But I have what I call the ‘white man problem’. I am constitutionally unable to just lay around. Although I do lay around a lot, I feel guilty that I am not producing useful work. The guilt is not heavy enough to cause me to get my ass in gear, but it is enough to disturb my dreamy sloth.
All that said, it feels good to write this this morning. Hope to see you Friday eve. at the WC.
Here is a notice from Darlene that we hope someone will find interesting:
“We are looking for some cool people (single, couple or small family) to rent the house on the property in front of us and next door to our son and daughter-in-law (Damian and Maya). It is an exceptionallly well-built, charming a-frame, 2 bedroom with a loft, open beam-ceiling, and a separate dome that was used as a yoga studio originally (I might add that the dome seats about 25 and has an incredible sound- no PA necessary for small concerts). The builder was a musician/artist/carpenter and a good friend of ours back in the 70’s. The house has a lot of heart and soul. We’d buy it in a heartbeat if it was for sale. It’s renting for $800.00 a month. We are building a community of environmentally-conscious people (starting with us!), and we want some great neighbors who think like us. People who love the desert and respect it’s beautiful, but fragile, landscape. People who are responsible and take care of what they have. People who value quiet, dark skies, and wildlife. Musicians and artists welcome!”
Dat’s all for now.
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.
Singer/Songwriter Eric Neil, with special guests… At the Water Canyon Coffee Co. In Yucca Valley Friday, July 28, 7-9PM
Neil (aka Steve Lester, da prez) is known for environmental and political folk songs which have had considerable media exposure around the country. He has several new songs as well as a number of his favorites he would like to introduce to his friends during the show. He will include some of the lesser known secular and religious music from his planet, but there will be no nudity permitted this time, either on stage or in the audience (sorry-rules are rules). As in the past, this music may attract visitations from the space lizards. If this happens, please do not be tempted to feed them, (remember what happened last time).
Please help get the word out asap….
A ‘unique’ opportunity will present itself Wednesday, July 26 at Pappy & Harriet’s at 6:00 pm when Robin Kobaly of the SummerTree Institute and Mike Branning of Unique Nursery will give a presentation and answer questions regarding refurbishing the burn areas.  There are some definate do’s and don’ts here folks — please don’t miss this opportunity.  I don’t know of anyone more knowledgeable on our high desert ecology than these two.  Even if you’re not in a burn area (yet), this will be good info to absorb and pass on.  I’m 99% sure it’s free.  If you have questions, call Robin at 363-7229 or Mike at 365-1511.
Thanks and hope to see you there!  –Amara Alban
Hello Dear Friend,
Do you think it’s possible that the enthusiasm and cultural energy and political activism of the 60s are going to reappear in the next months?
I DO! That is why I have again started to publish the Los Angeles Free Press as an informational and organizing newspaper, and why I have redesigned the Free Press website using community building software so that you and I and all of the other isolated progressives can talk and plan. Steve,
Good to know it is all still standing up there for the most part. You all have been on our thoughts over the past week. One of our favorite places in the world is that area and for the friends we have made up there I was truly concerned. I wanted to let you know that I revamped my website, fullvaluereview.com and have again been reposting your emails to the news column. If there is anything we could do like a benefit for people who lost homes or cars, we would love to help. Just point me in the right direction/person and ill forward a percent of my profits from shows to help the people who need it.
Thanks for all of your work for the scene up there,
Hey desert friends- Hope you are all breathing a little easier and getting back on your feet after this awful, awful fire. Johnny and I stared at the TV, feeling so helpless! We made our donation to the Red Cross but feel like we can do more. If any of you guys know of somebody who’s been displaced by the fire we have a couple of things to offer-
- a room in Topanga - if someone needs a change of scenery. The room is small, best for a single person or a cozy couple
- use of our trailer - in JT, near Border/Winters- has water but no power, comfy for a single, couple or small family
- foster a dog - can’t take any cats but happy to have a guest pooch if one needs a temporary home
Steve L- feel free to post this in the newsletter Steve B- ditto for the Sun Blast
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this tough time, Sending lots of love and support- Jewels and Johnny CITY FRITTER email - cityfritter@cityfritter.com call - 310-455-1047
Here is our webpage about the dry ice surface cleaning: http://ecostar-inc.com/dryice.htm
feel free to put the link in your newsletter. Click on the photo at the bottom of the page and you can see a short vid of soot removal.  Really impressive.  The CO2, in contact with a little moisture (contained in the wood) will briefly become carbonic acid, a natural biocide.  CARBONIC ACID [carbonic acid] H 2 CO 3 , is a weak dibasic acid formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water; it exists only in solution.  When the water evaporates (quickly), the acid is gone.
For people who have a lot of soot on surfaces, this is the ideal way to get it clean.
Hey Steve,
Couple things: firstly, unfortunately, my LA show at the Knitting Factory has been cancelled due to some headliner issues, so I’m not gonna be up in LA on the 25th of this month. Might wanna mention that on the next newsletter. I am however, gonna be up at Rimrock Ranch this weekend (the 22nd and 23rd) as Jim Austin is having a little barbeque and music jam for the Pioneertown locals; to boost some spirits and have some well-deserved fun times! So we’ll be singin’ and dancin’ up there on Saturday afternoon, hope you can make it!
Xo araby
(Araby-We got rained on at the park concert- I heard you guys got rained on bug time! Please keep us posted on Ranch activities as well as your shows. Jim doesn’t post with us.)
thanks for the update.   my best to jim austin and all who lost stuff. see you at the end of the month. tim
(tim, it turns out the vintage amps lost were Jon Bertini’s, stored at the Rimrock. Jon’s in mourning, not over the money as much as the fact that the amps were irreplaceable)
regarding the drummer joke last week, one reader said she’d heard the same joke about banjo players- I replied “if the shoe fits”. She replied:
That’s all I can ask….the shoe isn’t the appropriate figure, I guess it would be the hearing aide….!  The lizards are after the shoes….guess that means you are a lizard from space, huh?  I’m an Armadillo myself!
Dear Jammers and Creatives,
We’re already hard at work on the next issue - #68, dedicated to creative non-fiction - and we’re hoping that some of you will let us pick your brains. We’re looking for 100 to 200 word, punchy, sad, crazy, or rude pieces inspired by a major event or epiphany in your life. It could be about anything really . . . a haiku, a poem, a travel remembrance, an anecdote about living in the post s11 era, a piece about discovering one of your family’s dark secrets. We’re looking for stories that provoke and that go straight to the heart, with a “slice of life” feeling to them.
We’d like to pepper these short pieces throughout our upcoming issue. One warning: the deadline is tight, so we need all submissions sent to by July 26th. If we decide to go with your submission, you’ll get to see your name in print, and we’ll also pay you
50 cents/word.
Remember: keep it short, keep it true, and fire it off to us as quickly as you can.
Cheers, The Adbusters Team.
“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest–a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” — Albert Einstein
