Gig reports and editorial comments for the week July 12, 2006

Our Katrina-

This note to a few friends checking in should serve to explain the situation here this week. If you would like to post notices of needing or offering help to the community, send them to this email address and I will post the notices as often as necessary at the Water Canyon and also to the entire JAMS list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Steve-
I just wanted to check in and see how you’re doing. I hope you, your family and home are safe. Please let us know if you need anything. Stay safe, Heather
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just checking to see if you & your family are okay! If you need anything, or know of anyone who needs anything…please call us. Ray & Denise

Ray, Denise, and Heather-

We are good here for now. Out here in the flats of JT, the fire danger is much reduced. The desert overall has been devastated. As of now, the fire is still completely out of control and it will be 108 degrees today, but the wind is lower, which offers some hope. Two of the (much beloved) players in my band, Shadow Mountain, were evacuated from the Pitown area yesterday, one couldn’t get back home to rescue his instruments or pets before the fire came through. They won’t know if they still have homes till the police let them back into the area. Everybody is trying to be as upbeat as possible. The estimate of home loss right now runs the whole gamut; 30-40 to virtually everything in the fire’s path.

The reclusive and eccentric desert folks show their best nurturing sides when bad things happen. We are like a family going through strife. Everyone who has a home is offering to shelter those who don’t. The WC will post and announce offers of help and the official shelters for the displaced also have offers pouring in.

As you may imagine, the entertainment scenario is up in the air this week. The Water Canyon is in a very safe zone at the intersection of Pitown road and the highway(which is open), so, as of now, entertainment will continue as scheduled. Tanner is keeping the place open late because it is serving as a gathering place for displaced folks from up the hill. Pioneertown road is closed just beyond the WC. I am waiting to hear from Robyn and Linda about Pappy and Harriet’s schedule, I saw them last eve at the WC, but didn’t think to ask when they think they will be operating again. They probably wouldn’t have had any idea yesterday anyway. Historic Pitown was saved since it was a more defensible location than the rest of the area up there. We had the tues. jam with Kenny Brown as scheduled at the WC. It was mostly slow blues due to the devastation, but playing seemed to help the hurt a bit.

stev0

ps; I will go ahead and post the gig reports I have at this time, but you should call ahead to any location in Pioneertown and the north about whether the show is happening.

Dat’s all for now, folks-

Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Stay in tune.

Da prez

We want to encourage everyone who gets this email to go and see Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth. It is not about being Republican or Democrat or who is or isn’t president. It is not about politics or what someone’s persuasions are. It is about us, our children, our grandchildren and the planet we all live on. If you love your kids and the place that you live….go see this movie, it is important. We were moved….

Hi Steve:

You all sounded great this past Saturday.  It was the first time I saw all six of you and it sounded great.  It was the first time I ever got to enjoy Bill’s fiddle playing - GREAT!!!  And again, I’m a sucker for mountain music and good harmonies - and needless to say, enjoyed every bit of it. Catfish

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks so much for having me the other night.  It always feels good playing in that atmosphere.  You guys sounded GREAT!  Got a CD of y’all?
-Randy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Randy, so good to see you again. No CD of hillbilly music yet; we’ll try to get somethin’ recorded this summer. The band’s feelin’ so good. You take care of yourself over there. We’ll look forward to seeing and hearing you soon.

“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings — that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” — Buddha [Gautama Siddharta] (563 - 483 BC),

“…There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. … Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing.” — Daniel Webster, June 1, 1837
