The Whiskey - 10/18/05: Dork live performance review

Dork:

Sure there were a few people in the whiskey before Dork, but the real crowd appeared almost magically when Dork’s set was about to start. You know a band is going to make it when crowds are showing up only for them a thousand miles away from their hometown. Maybe it was their two times playing across the nation with Warped Tour. Dork has more style, poise, and definitely showmanship than any of that nonsense that’s big right now. They’re the band that puts you in that euphoric mood at every show which you relive every time you hear a studio track. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. For the record, this is coming from a habitual Pop Punk hater, but this is the nostalgic stuff of our childhood, it’s the type of band we all grew up listening to. We were all caught in an illusive Shangri La moment where people from all walks of life can put down their problems and enjoy the fleeting seconds ticking by. The Emo kids were sadly absent however, but you know they have Dork in their private myspace to experience the next best thing to seeing Dork live. Stop by www.myspace.com/dork. All you myspace haters can do it too, we promise we won’t judge you. Just a side note, Yes, Bryan did slowly strip off an article of clothing every time the audience screamed, “Fuck yeah!” along with the song “Fuck yeah!” leaving with only a pair of boxers. For the record, Yes, it must have been pretty warm, and No, he’s never going to live it down.

P.S. For all the old Dork fans, Dork played the super catchy “Friday Night,” which was definitely hit material before they retired it.

Tractor Race 10/2/05: Keenwild, Shawn Mafia, Limbeck

Keenwild:

Keenwild began the second day of Tractor Race entertainment, opening with “The Green Paper.” If you’re a fan of Hardcore, don’t bother, but if you like some good, clean, (well except for the song “Mr. Pete”), fun Pop Rock every once in a while, Keenwild is a great show. Their fan base, including thousands of myspace friends, speaks for itself. Ending with a surprising , uncensored, “Mr. Pete,” (because it’s a rock and roll show of course), Keenwild managed to attract quite a few listeners to the tent. Check them out at www.myspace.com/keenwild.

Shawn Mafia:

Shawn Mafia, dressed in his mobster attire, took the stage to play a solo acoustic set. It is hard to categorize his sound, especially solo, however, he seems to be some kind of weird Indie with a very original manner of speaking/singing. Shawn Mafia easily captured the hearts of the crowd because of his turn of the century carnival appeal. This is one awesome dude. I seriously cannot wait to see him with his full band. Listen to his music online at http://www.myspace.com/shawnmafiathetencentthrills, although you have to see him live to get the full Shawn Mafia experience.

Limbeck:

As soon as Limbeck entered with their vintage guitars, amps, and basses, I knew I was about to witness an interesting show. Blasting off into a signature Country Rock tune, Limbeck attracted many loud fans, which filled the tent with cheers. They have a vintage Texas vibe, with a modern edge, as well as a uniquely progressive sound, which includes aspects of Blues and Southern Rock. Combining jangly clean guitar rhythms with string bending solos and groovy bass riffs, Limbeck has both technical instrumentals and skilled vocals. Check them out at www.myspace.com/limbeck.
